parenting skills you must have
Many parents assume that everything they have to know about raising their kids is self evident, but sometimes it's necessary to pick up some new skills. This is because not one person is absolutely perfect; every person has areas of improvement or weaknesses that they need to improve upon. The world changes every moment; for example, most of today's generations of parents didn't grow up online but they still have to carefully monitor their kids use of the internet to see how the online world affects them. Let's examine some of the important parenting skills that all parents should work on.  Everyone has heard that it's good to praise children, but you have to be conscious on how you do this. There are some parents who do not praise their kids enough but there are just as many who do so in a non-helpful way. For one thing, it is a good idea to praise kids for something that they have actually made a real effort at instead of something that they do not have any control over. If a child is naturally intelligent, attractive or athletic, for example, to constantly praise them for this may be counterproductive and cause vanity or arrogance. On the other hand, praising your child for studying hard in school, working hard to be a better athlete, etc is simply offering encouragement to do their best.
You've probably been told that the highest priority for a parent is to be as selfless as possible and to always put the kids before everything else. While it's true that every parent has to make certain sacrifices, you also have to make sure your own needs are met. Parents who neglect themselves will only burn themselves out, and this will also affect their parenting skills. You need to make sure that you make some "you" time. This also means that it is important to take some alone time with your partner and your spouse. There is no doubt that your kids are incredibly important to you but they do not need to be your only focus all of the time. This isn't good for you and it certainly isn't good for them because it deprives them of the ability to form their own resources.
You might have a hard time with this sometimes but but it is important to try to stay calm. Even if you do not feel calm, resist the urge to have an outburst or to yell at your kid. When you act in anger, you're not usually being effective, and you're sending the wrong message to your child. Even if you need to discipline your child, make sure you carry out that discipline calmly and straightforwardly and not angrily. It's natural to have emotions, but when you feel like you're losing control, take a few deep breaths and try to take a break from the situation. More importantly, don't let yourself make any decisions about your actions until you've calmed down. Discipline should be based on rational principles, not emotions. As the parent, you want to be in control as much as possible.
The parenting skills we have explored in this article are just a few considerations that every parent needs to be mindful of. Parenting skills involve many different things from active listening to your
kids to knowing when they need to be disciplined. Being a good parent means striking a balance between being involved in your child's life and also helping him/her learn how to develop their own abilities.
