The preparatory work in terms of preparing the methodological
documents, the design of the surveys, data capture, statistical
analysis of the data and the compilation of this report was
undertaken by two African experts ; Mr Michel MOUYELO-KATOULA
and Mr Kantilal MUNNSAD.

The Statistical Office of the European Communities (SOEC) has
over the years been collaborating closely with the African
national statistical offices, both through bilateral
negotiations and through international organizations, towards
strengthening the structure of the statistical offices and
providing assistance with the aim of innovations and
improvements, in terms of methodology, of the statistics in
these countries.
The present report comparing the price levels and economic
aggregates of 22 African countries is an excellent example of
such cooperation. Work on the study, which can be called a
module to the World comparisons to be undertaken by the United
Nations Statistical Office, began in the fourth quarter of 1984
after the culmination of a similar study coordinated and
managed by SOEC for the 15 African countries that participated
in the comparisons of economic indicators for the reference
year 1980.
I am pleased to note that while the preparation of the
methodological documents and the statistical analysis ofe
results, was carried out by a team of two African experts and'
European officials, a large proportion of the work in terms of
organising and actual conduct of the surveys was undertaken by
the national officials in the respective countries.
It is my hope that this report will provide a useful source of
information to planners, researchers and others who are
concerned with development issues in the African countries
especially in the area of prices and national incomes.
I would like to thank the various international and regional
organizations and in particular the national statistical
offices in the countries that participated in the study, for
their assistance in ensuring the success of the project.
