CLASS - XII
SECOND TERM EXAMINATION (2011 2012)
SUBJECT - BIOLOGY
SET B1

Time: 1½ hour M. Marks: 35

Section - A (1 mark each)

Q 1. How is tobacco smoking associated with rise in emphysema (O deficiency) in 2
the body?
Ans. Tobacco has nicotine that stimulates the release of adrenaline / non
adrenaline to raise blood pressure.

Q 2. Expand ADA.
Ans. Adenosine deaminase

Q 3. What is Accelerated Eutrophication?
Ans. Cultural or Accelerated Eutrophication is man induced nutrient enrichment and
lack of oxygen in the water bodies.

Q 4. Name the bacterium that yields thermostable DNA polymerase.
Ans. Thermus aquaticus

1

Q 5.

The above graph shows Species-Area relationship. Write the equation of the
curve b .
Ans. log S = log C + Z log A

Where S = Species richness
Z = Slope of the line (regression coefficient)
A = area
C = Y intercept

Section B (2 marks each)

Q 6.

a) Identify A and B illustrations in the following:
b) Write the term given to A and C and why?
Ans. a) (A) - AATTC / Sticky end
(B) - Ori / Origin of Replication
b) Palindrome sequence, because the sequence of base pairs reads same on
the two strands when orientation of reading is kept the same.

2

Q 7. Explain giving reasons the cause of appearance of peaks a and b in the
graph shown below.

Ans. a disappearance of clean water / polluted water leading to the death of fish
b reappearance of clean water organisms

Q 8. (a) How is mature insulin different from proinsulin secreted by pancreas in
humans?
(b) Why is the functional insulin thus produced considered better than the
ones used earlier by diabetic patients?
Ans. a) The mature insulin has only two polypeptide chains A and B, while
proinsulin has three polypeptide chains A, B and C.
b) The insulin thus produced does not induce allergy or other types of
immunological reactions, whereas those used earlier were from other
animal sources and caused allergies or other reactions.

Q 9. Several varieties of biofortified crops have been released by research
scientists.
(a) What is the objective of this biofortification process?
(b) Give an example of such a crop with its biofortification.
Ans. a) The objectives of breeding improved nutritional quality of crops are to
increase the following :
(i) Protein content and quality
(ii) Oil / fat cond quality
(iii) Vitamin content
(iv) Mineral content

b) Some examples of crop varieties, with increased nutritional qualities, that
have been developed and released in India, are given below:
3

i. Lysine and tryptophan rich varieties of maize.
ii. High protein variety of wheat, Atlas 66 .
iii. Iron fortified variety of rice.
iv. Vitamin C enriched variety of bitter gourd, tomato, mustard,
bathua.
v. Iron and Calcium enriched variety of spinach and bathua.
vi. Protein enriched variety of beans like, French beans, Lablab
beans, broad beans and garden peas.
vii. Vitamin A enriched variety of carrots, spinach and pumpkin.

Q 10. Specify the pathogen / disease corresponding to a, b, c and d in the following
table:
1 Salmonella a
2 b Fluid filled alveoli
3 c Malignant malaria
4 Microsporum d

Ans. a Typhoid
b Pneumonia
c Plasmodium falciparum
d - Ringworm

Section C (3 marks each)

Q 11. Why was hybridisation carried out between the species of sugar cane grown
in North India and that grown in South India?
Ans. • Saccharum barberi, originally grown in North India, had poor sugar content
and yield.
• Saccharum officinarum, grown in South India, has thicker stems and
higher sugar content but did not grow well in North Inida.
• A cross has been made between these species and the hybrid variety,
combining the desirable qualities like thick stem, high sugar content and
higher yield is being grown in North India.

Q 12. The outline structure of a drug is given below:
a) Which group of drugs does this represent?
b) What are the modes of consumption of these drugs?
c) Name the organ of the body which is affected by consumption of these
drugs.
4

Ans. a) Cannabinoids
b) These are taken by inhalation and oral ingestion
c) Receptors in brain affect cardiovascular system.

Q 13. (i) Give the scientific name of the soil bacterium which produced crystal (Cry)
proteins.
(ii) How are these proteins useful in agriculture?
(iii) What do the differently written terms Cry and cry represent?
Ans. (i) Bacillus thuringiensis
(ii) These Cry proteins are toxic to certain larvae of insects.
- The gene encoding for cry protein has been isolated and transferred to
several crop plants (e.g. Bt cotton); such a crop plant is resistant to the
particular insect pest.
(iii) Cry refers to the crystal protein and cry refers to the gene encoding the Cry
protein.

Q 14. (i) Name the organism in which the vector shown is inserted to get the copies
of the desired gene.
(ii) Mention the area labeled in the vector responsible for controlling the copy
number of the inserted gene.
(iii) Name and explain the role of a selectable marker in the vector shown.

5

OR
A schematic representation of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) upto the
extension stage is given below. Answer the questions that follow:

(i.) Name the process a .
(ii.) Identify b .
(iii.) Identify c . Name the bacterium from which it is isolated. Mention its
importance in PCR.
Ans. (i) Escherichia coli / E. coli
(ii) Ori
R(iii) amp is the marker gene that helps in identification and elimination of the
non transformant growing in ampicillin medium / selectively permitting the
growth of the transformant resistant to ampicillin.
6

ROr, tel is the marker gene that helps in identification and elimination of the
non-transformant growing in tetracycline medium / selectively permitting
the growth of the transformant resistant to tetracycline.

OR

(i) a is denaturation of the double-stranded DNA
(ii) b primers
(iii) c DNA polymerase or Taq polymerase. Thermus aquaticus. Importance
is as following:
• This enzyme extends the primers using the nucleotides provided in the
reaction medium and the genomic DNA as the template.
• Taq polymerase is thermostable and withstands the high temperature
used in the denaturation process.

Q 15. Mention three differences between in situ and ex situ approaches of
conserving biodiversity giving an example of each.
Ans.
S. No. In situ conservation Ex situ conservation
1. It is the process of It is the process of
protecting the protecting the
endangered species of endangered species of
plant or animal in the plant or animal by
natural habitat itself or removing it from the
by defending the unsafe or threatened
species from predators. habitat and placing under
the care of humans.
2. It helps in recovering It helps in recovering
populations in the populations or preventing
surroundings where their extinction under
they have developed simulated conditions that
their distinctive features. closely resemble their
natural habitats.
3. e.g., National Parks, e.g., Botanical gardens,
Biosphere reserves, Zoos, Arboreta, Seed /
Wildlife sanctuaries. Pollen banks, Gene
banks, etc.

Section D (5 marks each)

Q 16. What is rDNA technology? Represent only by diagrams the steps in the
construction of recombinant DNA.
Ans. Any technology that cuts two different DNA molecules & then join together to
produce a recombinant molecule is Recombinant DNA Technology.
