Answers to “Test Your Understanding” Questions Chapter 1 1. Rexx is a higher-level language in that each line of code accomplishes more than does code written in traditional languages like C++, COBOL, or Pascal. Rexx derives its power from the fact it is a glue language — a language that ties together existing components such as other programs, routines, filters, objects, and the like. The industry-wide trend towards scripting languages is based on the higher productivity these languages yield.

3. The New Degree CEGE – Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering Department
Background
In 2004 – old degree structure (30 to 40 years)
Complex degree structure (12 degrees)
Entry requirements were very low (BBB)
Our students were seen to lose motivation throughout the course
Students complaint:
“Too much teaching, with little time to think and apply knowledge”
Staff frustration lead to complaints:
“Imbalanced workload”
“Timetable problems”
External Examiner commented that marks in years prior to
graduation did not reflect students’ ability
Industry emphasized the need for free-thinking and adaptable
graduates with well-developed problem-solving skills.CEGE – Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering Department
The solution
Complete re-design of the degree programmes, aiming:
To offer degree programmes radically different in structure and content from those
of our competitors,
To attract the brightest students,
Systems Engineering and Problem based learning concepts were introduced by
an external consultant,
Real Engineering problems introduced at earlier stages (problem based learning),
To motivate and inspire
Work Groups spent a year reviewing different components:
What are the deliverables within a year?
What do we want our students to learn?
Do we follow an incremental timeline, characteristic of Scientific subjects?
Programme Directors met weekly to integrate ideas and bring
coherence to the structure.CEGE – Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering Department
