The following technical information shows how to install your operating system using the Dell™ PowerEdge™Installation and Server ManagementCD. NOTE:If you purchased a Dell system without an operating system, Dell strongly recommends that you use the supported version of theInstallation and Server ManagementCD (calledDell Server AssistantCD in the Dell OpenManage™ kit prior to version 4.3) to install the operating system. TheDell PowerEdge Service and Diagnostic UtilitiesCD contains the latest drivers available at the time you purchased your system. See the Dell Support Website atsupport.dell.comfor any updated drivers that were not included on yourService and Diagnostic UtilitiesCD. TheInstallation and Server ManagementCD installs the standard operating system software and the Dellspecific device drivers that are not on the operating system CDs. ® NOTICE:The Installation and Server Management CD installs Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003. During the installation procedure, all data is erased from your hard drive. Dell recommends that you back up your data before you perform this procedure. NOTE:See the Dell Support website atsupport.dell.comfor the latest BIOS, firmware, and driver updates. See "Important Information for Windows Server 2003" on the Dell Support website for information on the minimum supported BIOS, system firmware, and RAID controller driver versions for Windows Server 2003. To perform a clean installation of the operating system: 1Connect a keyboard, mouse, and monitor to your system. 2Turn on your system. 3Insert theInstallation and Server ManagementCD into the CD drive. 4Press <Ctrl><Alt><Delete> to restart your system.

If you are not using theInstallation and Server ManagementCD for the first time, theDell OpenManage Server Assistantwindow appears. Go to step 6. If you are using theInstallation and Server ManagementCD on your system for the first time, perform the following steps: aWhen prompted, click the appropriate language for your system. TheDell Software License Agreementwindow appears. Read the information carefully. bIf you agree with all of the information, clickAcceptto continue. If you do not agree with all the information, clickDecline. Your system restarts, and you are not able to complete the operating system installation. ClickServer Setupto install the operating system. TheSet the Date and Timewindow appears. Select the appropriate date, time, and time zone, and click Continue. If a RAID controller is not installed in your system, theSelect Operating Systemwindow appears. Go to step 8. If a RAID controller is installed in your system, theConfigure or Skip RAIDwindow appears. Perform the following steps: aSelect one of the following options and clickContinue: • Configure RAID • Skip RAID Configuration If you selectSkip RAID configuration, go to step 8. If you selectConfigure RAID, configure the RAID with one of these options: • ClickGo to Advanced Wizardat the top left of the page and follow the prompts. • Select a RAID level and clickContinue. TheRAID Configuration Summaryappears.

bClickContinue. The following message appears: All existing virtual disk(s) on this controller will be deleted and all data will be lost. cClickOKto continue. TheSelect an Operating System to Installwindow appears. SelectMicrosoft Windows Server 2003and clickContinue. The following message appears:
This version of Server Assistant has been verified and tested on Microsoft Server 2003 Service Pack 1. Server Assistant will only support the installation and configuration of Microsoft Windows 2003 Service Pack 1.
ClickOKto continue. TheConfigure the Hard Drive for Microsoft Windowswindow appears. To set up a new boot partition, select the appropriate file system and size for your partition and clickContinue. NOTE:For maximum system security, Dell recommends selectingNTFS  NT File System. TheNetwork Adapter(s) Configurationwindow appears. Select one of the following options and clickContinue: • Obtain IP address from DHCP server. • Specify an IP address and subnet mask. • Skip this step and configure your IP and subnet mask settings after you install the operating system. TheEnter Configuration Information for Microsoft Windows Server 2003window appears.

Type your system information in the appropriate fields, and click Continue.
NOTE:If you leave any field blank, Windows Setup prompts you later for this information. NOTE:Click theAdvancedtab and enter additional information, if required. TheOperating System Installation Summarywindow appears. If the configuration settings are correct, clickContinue. TheMicrosoft Windows Installation Wizardwindow appears.
If the configuration settings are not correct, perform the following steps: aClickBackuntil the appropriate screen appears. bEnter the correct information. cClickContinueuntil theMicrosoft Windows Installation Wizard windowappears. When prompted, insert the firstWindows Server 2003CD into the CD drive. Server Assistant automatically detects theWindows Server 2003CD and copies the installation files to your system. NOTE:This procedure may take several minutes to complete. When completed, theDell OpenManage Server Assistantwindow appears. When prompted, remove theWindows Server 2003CD from the CD drive. ClickFinish. Your system automatically restarts, Windows Setup appears in text mode, and the installation continues. NOTE:If console redirection is enabled in the System Setup program, you are prompted for an administrator password in the text mode of Windows Setup. Enter an administrator password and press <Enter> to continue. TheEMSwindow appears. ClickOKto continue.

Windows Setup automatically restarts your system, and the Windows Setup window appears.
Windows Setup completes the installation, and theLog Onwindow appears.
NOTICE:To prevent a virus from infecting your system, Dell recommends that you download and install any patches, hotfixes, and service packs from the Microsoft Support website atsupport.microsoft.com.
