How to Safely and Correctly Lift Your Car?
Whenever you have to do routine repairs, maintenance and servicing or even changing the car tires, you need to lift your vehicle up. While ramps are an option, there are some repairs that you cannot do on your car since they are limiting. However, you can always use car floor jack and jack stands to lift and support the car while it is off the ground. Before you jack up the car, there are some safety procedures that you will need to consider.
Prepare Jack Stands:
The first thing you need to do before jacking your car up is to prepare the jack stands. Lift the anvil of the jack stand and work the adjustment lever. Push the lever down to lock the top in place once you reach the desired height. If you would like to readjust the height, all you need to do is lift the lever to release the lock, adjust then lock it down again. Ensure that you never use a cracked jack stand as it is dangerous.
Inspect the Lifting Plate
Most people use their jacks without checking the condition of the lifting plate. Ensure that it is free of any grease and dirt as this can be dangerous. It could cause slips. Clean it up to get it in top shape. Ensure that you do not use anything between the lifting plate and the vehicle as it could slip off and cause damage to the car and injury to whoever might be working under the car.
Inspect the Metal Wheels:
A jack has wheels that tend to roll slightly as the vehicle is raised up. If any of these wheels are broken or missing, you need to replace them. The other option is to get a new unit if you cannot find their replacements. If they are stuck, the solution lies in lubricating them to ensure there is free movement.
Test the Jack:
Before you use the jack, you will need to test it. First, turn the handle clockwise to close the release valve until it is tight. Once this is done, push the handle up and down to create pressure in the jack and thus raise the lifting plate. If the lifting plate does not respond by rising it could mean that the hydraulic fluid is low or that the lifting plate is broken. Check the fluid level to rectify the problem. Locate the fill plug, which is often close to the reservoir, and remove it. Using a funnel, add fluid till it is about an eighth of an inch away from the top of the hole. Replace the plug and retest the jack.
Chock the Wheels and Place the Car:
When you are raising the car, you want to ensure that it does not roll over. To do this, place the car in park if it is has automatic transmission or in the first gear if it has manual transmission. For added precaution, engage the parking brakes and then chock the wheels on the side of the car that you are not lifting. These safety precautions will help to save your life and preserve the car as you lift the car and work underneath it.
