Solanio. Auch nicht verliebt? Gut denn, so seid Ihr traurig, Weil Ihr nicht lustig seid; Ihr könntet eben Auch lachen, springen, sagen: Ihr seid lustig, Weil Ihr nicht traurig seid. Nun, beim zweiköpfgen Janus! Natur bringt wunderliche Käuz ans Licht: Der drückt die Augen immer ein und lacht Wie 'n Starmatz über einen Dudelsack; Ein andrer von so saurem Angesicht, Daß er die Zähne nicht zum Lachen wiese, Schwür Nestor auch, der Spaß sei lachenswert.
Salarino. Guten Morgen, liebe Herren!
Bassanio. Ihr lieben Herrn, wann lachen wir einmal? Ihr macht euch gar zu selten: muß das sein?
Salarino. Ich wär geblieben, bis ich Euch erheitert; Nun kommen wertre Freunde mir zuvor.
Antonio. Sehr hoch steht Euer Wert in meiner Achtung; Ich nehm es so, daß Euch Geschäfte rufen Und Ihr den Anlaß wahrnehmt, wegzugehn.
Lorenzo. Da Ihr Antonio gefunden habt, Bassanio, wollen wir Euch nun verlassen. Doch bitt ich, denkt zur Mittagszeit daran, Wo wir uns treffen sollen.
Salarino. Wir stehen Euch zu Diensten, wann's beliebt.
(Salarino und Solanio ab.)

Bassanio. Rechnet drauf.
Graziano. Ihr seht nicht wohl, Signor Antonio; Ihr macht Euch mit der Welt zuviel zu schaffen: Der kommt darum, der mühsam sie erkauft. Glaubt mir, Ihr habt Euch wunderbar verändert.
Antonio. Mir gilt die Welt nur wie die Welt, Graziano; Ein Schauplatz, wo man eine Rolle spielt, Und mein' ist traurig.
