www.PracticeGodsPresence.com                          The Gospel of Mark______________________________________________________________________1. The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, theSon of God; As it is written in the prophets, Behold,I send my messenger who shall prepare the waybefore thee. The voice of one crying in thewilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, make Hispaths straight. John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for theremission of sins. After confessing their sins manyfrom the land of Judaea and from Jerusalem werebaptized by him in the river of Jordan.John was clothed with camel's hair and woreanimal hides around his loins and he ate locustsand wild honey. He preached, saying, There comesone mightier than I, the latchet of whose shoes Iam not worthy to stoop down and unloose. I havebaptized you with water but He shall baptize youwith the Holy Ghost. And it came to pass in those days that Jesus camefrom Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by Johnin the river of Jordan. Immediately, upon Hiscoming up out of the water, John saw the heavensopen and the Spirit, like a dove, descend uponHim. And there came a voice from heaven saying,Thou art my beloved Son in whom I am wellpleased. The spirit drove Him into the wilderness. There, among wild beasts, He was tempted by Satan forforty days. Then the angels ministered to Him.Now, after that, John was put in prison and Jesuscame into Galilee. He began preaching the gospelof the kingdom of God and saying, The time isfulfilled. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repentand believe the gospel. He walked by the sea of Galilee, He saw Simonand Andrew, his brother, casting a net into the seafor they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them,Come ye after me and I will make you fishers ofmen. Immediately they left their nets and followedHim.When He had gone on a little farther, He sawJames, the son of Zebedee, and John, his brother,in a boat mending their nets. Jesus called them. They immediately left their father, Zebedee, in the
boat with the hired servants and went after Him.They went into Capernaum. On the sabbath dayHe entered the synagogue and taught. And theywere astonished at His doctrine for He taught themas one with authority and not as the scribes. And intheir synagogue there was a man with an uncleanspirit. He cried out and said, Let us alone. Whathave we to do with thee, Jesus of Nazareth? Artthou come to destroy us? I know who thou art, theHoly One of God. And Jesus rebuked him andsaid, Hold thy peace and come out of him. Andwhen the unclean spirit had torn him, and criedwith a loud voice, he came out of him.The people were amazed, so much so that theyquestioned among themselves, saying, What isthis? What new doctrine is this? He evencommands with authority the unclean spirits andthey obey Him. Immediately His fame spreadthroughout the region around Galilee. After they left the synagogue, they went to thehouse of Simon and Andrew. Simon's wife'smother lay sick with a fever, and presently theytold Jesus about her. He came and took her by thehand. Then He lifted her up and, immediately, thefever left her. And she, then, ministered to them. That evening around sunset, many people werebrought to Him who were diseased and some whowere possessed with devils. And all the citygathered together at the door. Jesus healed manythat were sick of divers diseases. He cast outmany devils and did not allow the devils to speakbecause they knew Him.The next morning, rising before dawn, He went to asolitary place to pray. Simon and those who werewith him followed. When they found Him, they said,All men seek for thee. And Jesus said to them, Letus go on to the next towns that I may preach therealso: for therefore came I forth. And Jesus preached in the synagogues throughoutGalilee, and cast out devils. There came to Him aleper. Kneeling down and beseeching Him, theleper said, If thou wilt, thou can make me clean.Jesus was moved with compassion. He put out Hishand, touched him, and said, I will. Be thou clean. And, as soon as He had spoken, the leprosydeparted and the man was cleansed. Jesus directlycharged him to say nothing to any man. Jesus
said, Go thy way. Show thyself to the priest andoffer for thy cleansing those things which Mosescommanded for a testimony to them. But he went out and began to broadcast thematter. He said so much that Jesus could no moreopenly enter the city but had to stay out in desertplaces. And they came to Him from every quarter.2 After some days Jesus entered Capernaumagain and His arrival was widely announced. Thepeople knew that He returned to the house. And,immediately, many gathered, so much that therewas no room to receive them, no, not so much asoutside the door. Jesus preached the word tothem. There came to Him one sick with palsy who wascarried by four others. When they could not getnear Jesus because of the crowd, they uncoveredthe roof above where Jesus stood. Having brokenthrough, they lowered down the bed wherein thesick man lay. When Jesus saw their faith, He saidto the sick man, Son, thy sins are forgiven thee. There were certain of the scribes sitting there. They wondered, Why does this man speakblasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God only? When Jesus realized that they so reasoned, Hesaid to them, Why reason ye these things in yourhearts? Whether it is easier to say to the sick man,Thy sins are forgiven thee; or, Arise. Take up thybed and walk?So that ye may know that the Son of man haspower on earth to forgive sins, (Jesus turned to thesick man and said,) I say to thee, Arise. Take upthy bed and go thy way to thine own house. At thatmoment, he arose, took up the bed, and went forthbefore them all. They were amazed. They glorifiedGod, saying, We never saw anything like this.Jesus went to the seaside again and the multitudegathered around Him, and He taught them. Later,He saw Levi, the son of Alphaeus, sitting at thereceipt of custom, and said to him, Follow me. Andhe arose and followed Him.And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at supperin Levi's house, many publicans and sinners alsojoined together with Jesus and His disciples. Therenow were many who followed Him. And when thescribes and Pharisees saw Him eating withpublicans and sinners, they asked His disciples,
How is it that He eats and drinks with publicansand sinners? When Jesus heard this, He said tothem, Those who are whole have no need of aphysician, only those who are sick. I came not tocall the righteous, but to call sinners to repentance. The disciples of John and of the Pharisees came toJesus and asked, Why do the disciples of John andthe Pharisees fast, but thy disciples do not? AndJesus said to them, Can the children of thebridechamber fast while the bridegroom is withthem? As long as they have the bridegroom withthem, they cannot fast. But the day will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away fromthem, and then they shall fast.No man sews a piece of new cloth on an oldgarment: else the new piece that filled it up takesaway from the old and the rent is made worse. Andno man puts new wine into old bottles: else thenew wine bursts the bottles, the wine is spilled, andthe bottles are marred. New wine must be put intonew bottles. And it came to pass, that He went through the cornfields on the sabbath day; and His disciples beganto pluck the ears of corn as they went along. ThePharisees said to Him, Behold, why do they do thatwhich is not lawful on the sabbath day? And Jesusresponded, Have ye never read what David, andthey that were with him, did when they had needand were hungry? How he went into the house ofGod in the days of Abiathar, the high priest, andate the showbread? How this was only lawful forthe priests to eat? And how David also gave it tothose who were with him? Then Jesus said tothem, The sabbath was made for man, and notman for the sabbath; therefore, the Son of man isLord of the sabbath also.3 Then Jesus entered the synagogue again. Insidewas a man with a withered hand. They watched tosee if Jesus would heal him on the sabbath day sothey might accuse Him. And Jesus said to the manwith the withered hand, Step Forward. Then Jesussaid to them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbathdays, or to do evil? To save life, or to kill? But theyremained silent.Jesus looked at them with anger and was grievedfor the hardness of their hearts. He said to theman, Stretch forth thy hand. As the man stretchedit out, his hand was restored as whole as his otherhand.
The Pharisees left and immediately took counselwith the Herodians about how they might get rid ofHim. But Jesus withdrew with His disciples to thesea. A great multitude from Galilee, Judaea,Jerusalem, Idumaea, and from beyond Jordan, and those around Tyre and Sidon came to Himwhen they heard all the things He did.Jesus told His disciples He needed to get out into asmall boat lest the multitude should throng Him.For He had healed many and many who hadplagues now pressed upon Him just to touch Him.Unclean spirits, when they saw Him, fell downbefore Him and cried, Thou art the Son of God.Jesus directly charged them that they should notmake Him known. Then Jesus went up into a mountain. He called towhom He would and they came to Him. Here Heordained twelve to be with Him, and that He mightsend forth to preach, to heal sickness, and to castout devils. Then He took these twelve into a house:Simon surnamed Peter; James, the son ofZebedee, John, the brother of James (He namedthem Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder);Andrew; Philip; Bartholomew; Matthew; Thomas;James, the son of Alphaeus; Thaddaeus; Simonthe Canaanite; and Judas Iscariot, who alsobetrayed Him.Then the multitude came again so that they couldnot eat bread undisturbed. When His friends heardabout this, they lay hold of Him and said, This istoo much. And the scribes who came down fromJerusalem said, He has Beelzebub, and, by theprince of the devils, He casts out devils.Jesus called them to Him and said, How can Satancast out Satan? And if a kingdom be dividedagainst itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if ahouse be divided against itself, that house cannotstand. And if Satan rise up against himself, and bedivided, he cannot stand and is finished. Nor can aman enter into a strong man's house and spoil hisgoods unless he first binds up the strong man sohe can then spoil his house.Verily I say to you, All sins shall be forgiven to thesons of men, and blasphemies also, however theyblaspheme. But he that blasphemes against theHoly Ghost will never have forgiveness, but is indanger of eternal damnation. He said this becausethey said, He has an unclean spirit.
His brethren and His mother came and, standingoutside, they called for Him. The multitude that sataround Him said, Behold, thy mother and thybrethren are outside and seek for thee. Jesusanswered, Who is my mother, or my brethren? Then He looked around on those who sat aboutHim and said, Behold, my mother and my brethren!Whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is mybrother, and my sister, and mother.4 Later, as Jesus was again by the seaside, theregathered a great multitude. He entered into a boatand began to address the large crowd on shore. He taught them many things by parables. Jesusbegan, Hearken. Behold, there went out a sower ofseeds. It came to pass, as he sowed, some seedfell by the wayside. The fowls of the air came anddevoured it. Some seed fell on stony ground wherethere was no good soil. It sprang up quickly. But,because it had no roots, it was scorched by thesunlight and withered away. Some seed fell among thorns. The thorns grew upand choked it, and it yielded no fruit. Other seedfell on good ground. This did yield fruit that sprangup and increased; and brought forth some thirty, some sixty, and some a hundredfold. And Jesusfinished by saying, He that has ears to hear, lethim hear. After this, when the twelve were alone with Jesus, they asked Him about the parable and why He toldthe people a parable. Jesus said to them, To you itis given to know the mystery of the kingdom ofGod. But, to those who are without, the teachingsare in parables: That seeing they may see, and notperceive; and hearing they may hear, and notunderstand; lest at any time they should beconverted, and their sins should be forgiven them. And Jesus said to them, Know ye not this parable? The sower sows the word. And these are thepeople by the wayside, where the word is sown. When they have heard, Satan comes immediatelyand takes away the word that was sown in theirhearts. And these are likewise those who are sown onstony ground. When they have heard the word, they receive it with gladness. But they have no rootand endure only for a while. When affliction orpersecution arises for the word's sake, they areoffended.
And these are also the seed sown among thethorns of the cares of this world, the deceitfulnessof riches, and the lusts of other things. All thesethorns enter in, choke the word, and it becomesunfruitful. And, finally, are those who are sown ongood ground. In hearing the word, they receive itand bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundredfold. Then Jesus said, Is a candle lighted to be putunder a bushel, or under a bed instead of set on acandlestick? You see, if there is nothing hiddenwhich shall not be manifested, then there is nothingkept secret, which shall not be uncovered. If anyman has ears to hear, let him hear. And He said to them, Take heed what ye hear. With what measure ye mete, it shall be measuredto you. And to you that hear, more shall be given. For he that has, to him shall be given. He that hasnot, from him shall be taken away even that whichhe has. Then Jesus said, Such is the kingdom of God like aman who casts seed into the ground. He passesnights and days, and the seed springs up andgrows, he knows not how. For the earth bringsforth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, and, after that, the full ear of corn. When the fruitis ripe, immediately he puts the sickle to it becausethe harvest is come. And He said, Whereto shall we liken the kingdomof God? With what shall we compare it? It is like agrain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown inthe earth, it is less than all the seeds on earth. Butwhen it is sown, it grows up and becomes greaterthan all. It shoots out branches so great that thefowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it.To those without, Jesus spoke in parables. Heexplained all these things to His disciples whenthey were alone. That evening, Jesus told His disciples that theyshould cross over to the other side. And when theysent away the multitude, they took Him even as Hewas in the boat. There were also other little ships. And there arose a great storm. Wind and wavesbeat into the boat and it was now full of water.Jesus was in the back part of the boat, asleep on apillow. They woke Him and said, Master, carestthou not that we perish? Then Jesus arose, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Peace, bestill.
The wind ceased and there was a great calm.Jesus said to them, Why are ye so fearful? How isit that ye have no faith? Then those nearby saidone to another, What kind of man is this that eventhe wind and the sea obey?5 They arrived on the other side of the sea, intothe country of the Gadarenes. When Jesus got outof the boat, He was immediately met by a manwho came out of his dwelling place in the tombs. The man had an unclean spirit and no man couldbind him. Whenever he had been bound withfetters and chains, he plucked the chains asunderand broke the fetters in pieces. No one could tamehim and night and day he was in the mountains orin the tombs, crying, and cutting himself withstones.Yet, when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran andworshipped Him. The man cried with a loud voice,What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son ofthe most high God? I adjure thee by God that thoutorment me not. Jesus turned to the man saying,Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. ThenJesus asked, What is thy name? The mananswered, My name is Legion: for we are many. And he besought Jesus that he not send themaway out of the country.Nearby, in the mountains, there was a great herdof swine feeding. The devils, in one voice, said,Send us to those swine that we may enter intothem. Right away, Jesus gave them leave. Theunclean spirits left the man and entered into theswine. The herd ran violently down a steep slopeinto the sea and drowned (there were about twothousand). The swine tenders fled and told it in the city and inthe country. The people went out to see what wasdone. When they approached Jesus, they saw theman that was possessed with the devil and had thelegion, sitting, clothed, and in his right mind. Thepeople became fearful. Those who saw it told theothers how it befell the man who was possessed, and also told about the swine. The people thenbegged Jesus to leave their coasts. When He returned to the boat, the man who hadbeen possessed prayed Jesus to let him stay withHim. Howbeit, Jesus suffered him not but said, Gohome to thy friends. Tell them the great things theLord has done for thee, and tell them He has hadcompassion on thee. Then the man departed and
began to tell all in Decapolis the great things Jesushad done for him. Then all men did marvel. After Jesus crossed again by boat to the otherside, many people gathered to Him. And, behold, there came one of the rulers of the synagogue,Jairus by name. When he saw Jesus, he fell at Hisfeet and besought Him saying, My little daughter isat the point of death. I pray thee, come and lay thyhands on her that she may be healed and shalllive. Jesus went with him and the people followedand thronged Him.In the crowd was a woman who had an issue ofblood for twelve years. She had been to manyphysicians, spent all that she had, and nothing wasbettered, but, instead, grew worse. She had heardof Jesus and, pressing through the crowd, shecame up behind Him and touched His garment. She said, If I may but touch His clothes, I shall bewhole. After she did this the fountain of her bloodwas dried up and she felt in her body that she washealed.Presently, Jesus, knowing in Himself that virtuehad gone out of Him, turned about and said, Whotouched my clothes? His disciples said, Thou seestthe multitude thronging thee and ask Who touchedme? Then Jesus spotted her who had done thisthing. The woman, in fear and trembling, butknowing what was done in her, came and fell downbefore Him and spoke the truth. He said to her,Daughter, thy faith has made thee whole; go inpeace, and be whole of thy plague. While He yet spoke, messengers came from theruler of the synagogue's house and announced,Thy daughter is dead. Why trouble the Master anyfurther? As soon as Jesus heard the message, Hesaid to the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe. Jesus allowed no one to follow Himexcept Peter, James, and John, the brother ofJames. When they got to the house of the ruler ofthe synagogue, Jesus saw the tumult and manyweeping and wailing.Inside the house Jesus said to them, Why makethis commotion and weep? The damsel is notdead, but sleeps. They laughed Him to scorn. Butwhen He had put them all out, He took the fatherand mother of the damsel and those who were withHim and entered where she was lying. Then Jesustook her by the hand and said, Talitha cumi;Damsel, I say to thee, arise.
