Speech, Acts Third Edition 1913Author: R F WeymouthRelease Date: September, 2005 [EBook #8832][This file was first posted on August 25, 2003]Edition: 10Language: English*** START OF THE PROJECT GUTENBERGEBOOK, Weymouth New Testament in ModernSpeech, Acts ***Produced by Martin.Ward@durham.ac.ukBook 44 Acts 001:001 My former narrative,Theophilus, dealt with all that Jesus did andtaught as a beginning, down to the day onwhich, 001:002 after giving instruction throughthe Holy Spirit to the Apostles whom He hadchosen, He was taken up to Heaven. 001:003 Hehad also, after He suffered, shown Himselfalive to them with many sure proofs, appearingto them at intervals during forty days, andspeaking of the Kingdom of God. 001:004 Andwhile in their company He charged them not toleave Jerusalem, but to wait for the Father'spromised gift. "This you have heard of," Hesaid, "from me. 001:005 For John indeedbaptized with water, but before many days
have passed you shall be baptized with theHoly Spirit." 001:006 Once when they were withHim, they asked Him, "Master, is this the timeat which you are about to restore the kingdomof Israel?" 001:007 "It is not for you," Hereplied, "to know times or epochs which theFather has reserved within His own authority;001:008 and yet you will receive power whenthe Holy Spirit has come upon you, and youwill be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in allJudaea and Samaria and to the remotest partsof the earth." 001:009 When He had said this, and while they were looking at Him, He wascarried up, and a cloud closing beneath Himhid Him from their sight. 001:010 But, whilethey stood intently gazing into the sky as Hewent, suddenly there were two men in whitegarments standing by them, 001:011 who said,"Galilaeans, why stand looking into the sky? This same Jesus who has been taken up fromyou into Heaven will come in just the same wayas you have seen Him going into Heaven."001:012 Then they returned to Jerusalem fromthe mountain called the Oliveyard, which isnear Jerusalem, about a mile off. 001:013 Theyentered the city, and they went up to the upperroom which was now their fixed place formeeting. Their names were Peter and John,James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas,Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son ofAlphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas thebrother of James. 001:014 All of these with onemind continued earnest in prayer, together withsome women, and Mary the mother of Jesus,
and His brothers. 001:015 It was on one ofthese days that Peter stood up in the midst ofthe brethren—the entire number of personspresent being about 120—and said, 001:016"Brethren, it was necessary that the Scriptureshould be fulfilled— the prediction, I mean, which the Holy Spirit uttered by the lips ofDavid, about Judas, who acted as guide tothose who arrested Jesus. 001:017 For Judaswas reckoned as one of our number, and ashare in this ministry was allotted to him."001:018 (Now having bought a piece of groundwith the money paid for his wickedness he fellthere with his face downwards, and, his bodybursting open, he became disembowelled.001:019 This fact became widely known to thepeople of Jerusalem, so that the place receivedthe name, in their language, of Achel-damach,which means `The Field of Blood.') 001:020"For it is written in the Book of Psalms, "`Lethis encampment be desolate: let there be noone to dwell there'; and "`His work let anothertake up.' 001:021 "It is necessary, therefore, that of the men who have been with us all thetime that the Lord Jesus went in and outamong us— 001:022 beginning from Hisbaptism by John down to the day on which Hewas taken up again from us into Heaven—oneshould be appointed to become a witness withus as to His resurrection." 001:023 So twonames were proposed, Joseph called Bar-sabbas— and surnamed Justus—and Matthias.001:024 And the brethren prayed, saying,"Thou, Lord, who knowest the hearts of all,
show clearly which of these two Thou hastchosen 001:025 to occupy the place in thisministry and Apostleship from which Judasthrough transgression fell, in order to go to hisown place." 001:026 Then they drew lotsbetween them. The lot fell on Matthias, and aplace among the eleven Apostles was voted tohim. 002:001 At length, on the day of theHarvest Festival, they had all met in one place;002:002 when suddenly there came from thesky a sound as of a strong rushing blast ofwind. This filled the whole house where theywere sitting; 002:003 and they saw tongues ofwhat looked like fire distributing themselvesover the assembly, and on the head of eachperson a tongue alighted. 002:004 They were allfilled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speakin foreign languages according as the Spiritgave them words to utter. 002:005 Now therewere Jews residing in Jerusalem, devout menfrom every part of the world. 002:006 So whenthis noise was heard, they came crowdingtogether, and were amazed because everyoneheard his own language spoken. 002:007 Theywere beside themselves with wonder, andexclaimed, "Are not all these speakersGalilaeans? 002:008 How then does each of ushear his own native language spoken by them?002:009 Some of us are Parthians, Medes,Elamites. Some are inhabitants ofMesopotamia, of Judaea or Cappadocia, ofPontus or the Asian Province, of Phrygia orPamphylia, 002:010 of Egypt or of the parts ofAfrica towards Cyrene. Others are visitors from
Rome—being either Jews or converts fromheathenism—and others are Cretans orArabians. 002:011 Yet we all alike hear theseGalilaeans speaking in our own language aboutthe wonderful things which God has done."002:012 They were all astounded andbewildered, and asked one another, "What canthis mean?" 002:013 But others, scornfullyjeering, said, "They are brim-full of sweetwine." 002:014 Peter however, together withthe Eleven, stood up and addressed them in aloud voice. "Men of Judaea, and all youinhabitants of Jerusalem," he said, "be in nouncertainty about this matter but pay attentionto what I say. 002:015 For this is notintoxication, as you suppose, it being only thethird hour of the day. 002:016 But that whichwas predicted through the Prophet Joel hashappened: 002:017 "And it shall come to passin the last days, God says, that I will pour outMy Spirit upon all mankind; and your sons andyour daughters shall prophesy, and your youngmen shall see visions, and your old men shallhave dreams; 002:018 and even upon Mybondservants, both men and women, at thattime, I will pour out My Spirit, and they shallprophesy. 002:019 I will display marvels in thesky above, and signs on the earth below, bloodand fire, and pillars of smoke. 002:020 The sunshall be turned into darkness and the mooninto blood, to usher in the day of the Lord—thatgreat and illustrious day; 002:021 and everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall besaved.' 002:022 "Listen, Israelites, to what I
say. Jesus, the Nazarene, a man accredited toyou from God by miracles and marvels andsigns which God did among you through Him,as you yourselves know, Him— 002:023delivered up through God's settled purposeand foreknowledge— you by the hands ofGentiles have nailed to a cross and have put todeath. 002:024 But God has raised Him to life, having terminated the throes of death, for infact it was not possible for Him to be held fastby death. 002:025 For David says in referenceto Him, "`I constantly fixed my eyes upon theLord, because He is at my right hand in orderthat I may continue unshaken. 002:026 For thisreason my heart is glad and my tongue exults. My body also shall rest in hope. 002:027 ForThou wilt not leave me in the Unseen Worldforsaken, nor give up Thy holy One to undergodecay. 002:028 Thou hast made known to methe ways of Life: Thou wilt fill me withgladness in Thy presence.' 002:029 "As to thepatriarch David, I need hardly remind you, brethren, that he died and was buried, and thatwe still have his tomb among us. 002:030 Beinga Prophet, however, and knowing that God hadsolemnly sworn to him to seat a descendant ofhis upon his throne, 002:031 with propheticforesight he spoke of the resurrection of theChrist, to the effect that He was not leftforsaken in the Unseen World, nor did His bodyundergo decay. 002:032 This Jesus, God hasraised to life—a fact to which all of us testify.002:033 "Being therefore lifted high by themighty hand of God, He has received from the
Father the promised Holy Spirit and has pouredout this which you see and hear. 002:034 ForDavid did not ascend into Heaven, but he sayshimself, "`The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at Myright hand 002:035 until I make thy foes afootstool under thy feet.' 002:036 "Therefore letthe whole House of Israel know beyond alldoubt that God has made Him both LORD andCHRIST— this Jesus whom you crucified."002:037 Stung to the heart by these words, theysaid to Peter and the rest of the Apostles,"Brethren, what are we to do?" 002:038"Repent," replied Peter, "and be baptized, everyone of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, with aview to the remission of your sins, and youshall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 002:039For to you belongs the promise, and to yourchildren, and to all who are far off, whoever theLord our God may call." 002:040 And withmany more appeals he solemnly warned andentreated them, saying, "Escape from thiscrooked generation." 002:041 Those, therefore, who joyfully welcomed his Message werebaptized; and on that one day about threethousand persons were added to them; 002:042and they were constant in listening to theteaching of the Apostles and in theirattendance at the Communion, that is, theBreaking of the Bread, and at prayer. 002:043Fear came upon every one, and many marvelsand signs were done by the Apostles. 002:044And all the believers kept together, and hadeverything in common. 002:045 They sold theirlands and other property, and distributed the
proceeds among all, according to every one'snecessities. 002:046 And, day by day, attendingconstantly in the Temple with one accord, andbreaking bread in private houses, they tooktheir meals with great happiness and single-heartedness, 002:047 praising God and beingregarded with favour by all the people. Also, day by day, the Lord added to their numberthose whom He was saving. 003:001 One dayPeter and John were going up to the Temple forthe hour of prayer—the ninth hour—and, justthen, 003:002 some men were carrying thereone who had been lame from birth, whom theywere wont to place every day close to theBeautiful Gate (as it was called) of the Temple, for him to beg from the people as they went in.003:003 Seeing Peter and John about to go intothe Temple, he asked them for alms. 003:004Peter fixing his eyes on him, as John did also, said, "Look at us." 003:005 So he looked andwaited, expecting to receive something fromthem. 003:006 "I have no silver or gold," Petersaid, "but what I have, I give you. In the nameof Jesus Christ, the Nazarene—walk!" 003:007Then taking his hand Peter lifted him up, andimmediately his feet and ankles werestrengthened. 003:008 Leaping up, he stoodupright and began to walk, and went into theTemple with them, walking, leaping, andpraising God. 003:009 All the people saw himwalking and praising God; 003:010 andrecognizing him as the man who used to sit atthe Beautiful Gate of the Temple asking foralms, they were filled with awe and amazement
at what had happened to him. 003:011 While hestill clung to Peter and John, the people, awe-struck, ran up crowding round them in whatwas known as Solomon's Portico. 003:012Peter, seeing this, spoke to the people."Israelites," he said, "why do you wonder atthis man? Or why gaze at us, as though by anypower or piety of our own we had enabled himto walk? 003:013 The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our forefathers, hasconferred this honour on His Servant Jesus, whom you delivered up and disowned in thepresence of Pilate, when he had decided to letHim go. 003:014 Yes, you disowned the holyand righteous One, and asked as a favour therelease of a murderer. 003:015 The Prince ofLife you put to death; but God has raised Himfrom the dead, and we are witnesses as to that.003:016 It is His name—faith in that namebeing the condition— which has strengthenedthis man whom you behold and know; and thefaith which He has given has made this mansound and strong again, as you can all see.003:017 "And now, brethren, I know that it wasin ignorance that you did it, as was the casewith your rulers also. 003:018 But in this wayGod has fulfilled the declarations He madethrough all the Prophets, that His Christ wouldsuffer. 003:019 Repent, therefore, and reformyour lives, so that the record of your sins maybe cancelled, and that there may come seasonsof revival from the Lord, 003:020 and that Hemay send the Christ appointed beforehand foryou—even Jesus. 003:021 Heaven must receive
