Summary – Sleep disturbance in young children.This article treats the representation of sleep and its disorders in Western societies and other societies. This representation inßuences the bedtime practices of the child and manages with the anguish of separation which implies the subjectÕs solitude, which he must confront alone along with the idea of death. This representation of sleep implicating that of death introduces the founding referent of every society which thus mediatizes the relationship between the mother and her child, notably in bedtime practices. The collective beliefs underlying these practices attribute a meaning to co-sleeping in order to avoid the appearance of problems.
