A NACE Rev. 1 é uma nova nomenclatura de actividades, de quatro dígitos, elaborada em 1990. Trata-se de uma revisão da
«Nomenclatura Geral das Actividades Económicas na Comunidade Europeia», conhecida pelo acrónimo NACE, cuja primeira
publicação remonta a 1970.
No último quarto de século, grandes mudanças intervieram na natureza e no contexto das actividades económicas. É dessas mudanças
que a NACE Rev. 1 tenta dar conta.
A NACE de 1970 não tinha força legal, mas a NACE Rev. 1 foi objecto de legislação a nível da União Europeia' legislação essa que
vincula todos os Estados-Membros ao uso uniforme da nova nomenclatura. A NACE Rev. 1 é mais do que um modelo formatado
para envio de dados estatísticos ao Eurostat. Com efeito, a nova classificação é uma estrutura de enquadramento de todas as
nomenclaturas de actividades nacionais, no seio da União Europeia. Por outro lado. ela foi igualmente adoptada por um grande
número de outros Estados europeus, incluindo a maioria dos países da EFTA, e por um número significativo de países da Europa
Central e Orient
