The development of empiricist epistemology leads from a theory of truth as correspondence toward a theory of truth as representation. Behind this conception of truth appears a certain understanding of being, which belongs to the « metaphysics of representation ». But an examination of the practice of science obliges us to reinterpret rather radically the role of experience. Science creates its objects, in two senses : it conceives them, and it realizes them effectively. It would appear that the intimate interconnectedness of the procedures of theoretical construction and of the procedures of effective transformation can only be correctly described with the aid of the notion of « system ». Scientific practice constitutes a system, which a) must fulfil certain internal conditions (coherence, stability, optimality), b) must situate itself with respect to other systems, and c) must be able to transform itself. This system is evolving towards more and more integrated forms of self-organisation. In this perspective, truth becomes the degree of the integration potential. The concept of truth which intervenes here is the belonging to a totality. But the whole is a reality in movement ; truth is therefore itself a movement. However, in order to make this interpretation meaningful, it is necessary to reinsert scientific practice in the cosmic totality on the one hand, and in the dynamism of action on the other hand. The true totality is the horizon of sense.
Le développement de l'épistémologie empiriste conduit d'une doctrine de la vérité-correspondance à une doctrine de la vérité-représentation. Derrière cette conception de la vérité se profile une certaine compréhension de l'être, qui relève de la « métaphysique de la représentation ». Mais l'examen de la pratique scientifique impose une réinterprétation assez radicale du rôle de l'expérience. La science crée ses objets, en un double sens : elle les conçoit et elle les réalise effectivement. L'imbrication étroite des démarches de construction théorique et des démarches de transformation effective ne peut être décrite correctement, semble-t-il, que grâce à la notion de « système ». La pratique scientifique forme un système, qui doit répondre à certaines conditions d'ordre interne (cohérence, stabilité, optimalité), qui doit pouvoir se situer par rapport à d'autres systèmes, et qui doit pouvoir se transformer. Ce système s'oriente vers des formes d'auto-organisation de plus en plus intégrées. Dans cette perspective, la vérité devient le degré du potentiel intégrateur. Le concept de vérité qui joue ici, c'est l'appartenance à une totalité. Mais le tout est une réalité en mouvement: la vérité est donc elle-même un mouvement. Cependant, pour donner un sens à cette interprétation, il faut resituer la pratique scientifique dans la totalité cosmique d'une part, dans le dynamisme de l'action d'autre part. La véritable totalité, c'est l'horizon du sens.
