Reconnue en 1992 par la communauté internationale, après sept mois de guerre sans merci contre les forces combinées de l'Armée fédérale yougoslave et des milices paramilitaires serbes, la Croatie affiche un bilan très lourd : dommages humains et matériels considérables, sans compter la perte d'un tiers de son territoire. L'accueil de réfugiés, en 1993, et les bombardements incessants ont aggravé l'économie du pays. Sur le plan politique, Franjo Trudjman est durement critiqué. Pour être un Etat démocratique viable, un Etat de droit, la Croatie doit changer. Son futur s'inscrit peut-être en tant que membre important d'un nouveau regroupement en Europe centrale. Toutefois, un remodelage du paysage régional, dans le cadre d'une coopération avec l'UE, reste tributaire de l'issue du conflit qui se poursuit en exYougoslavie, notamment en Bosnie.

Recognized in 1992 by the International Community, after a bitter seven-month-long war against the combined forces of the Yugoslav National Army and Serb paramilitaries, Croatia has suffered substantial human and material damage, as well as the loss of one third of its territory. The economie situation of the country has been adversely affected by the arrival, in 1993, of refugees and continued shelling. Politically speaking, Franjo Trudjman faces harsh criticism. To become a viable democratie state based on the rule of law, Croatia needs change. Perhaps its future lies in becoming an important member of a new Central European grouping. However, a constructive rebuilding of the region within the framework of cooperation with the European Union depends upon the outcome of the conflict that is still going on in the former Yugoslavia and in Bosnia in particular.
