StrategicPlan2011‐2016Introduction TheRobertStempelCollegeofPublicHealth&SocialWork(RSCPHSW)2011StrategicPlan updatesthe2003‐2007StrategicPlanwhichlaidapathtoaccreditation.The2003‐2007Plan wasincrementallyrevised.ThenewplanmobilizestheCollegetoadvanceitsvision:“To advanceandintegratehealthandsocialwelfare,weseekexcellenceineducation,research,and communityservicefordiversecommunitiesanddynamicpopulations.”TheMPHprogramat FIUwasfirstaccreditedin1993bytheCouncilonEducationforPublicHealth;doctoral programswerestartedin2003tomeettherequirementsforanewschool;theRSCPHSW receiveditsfirstaccreditationasaschoolinJune2007.TheCollegenowenrollsalmost1500 students,employs70full‐timefaculty,andawardsalmost400degreesannually.Hispanic, Black,Asian,andinternationalstudentsrepresentalmost70%ofenrollmentintheRSCPHSW. Wetakeprideintheimpactourgraduatesmakeuponthenationandtheworld. TheRSCPHSW,theCollegeofNursingandHealthSciences,andtheHerbertWertheimCollege ofMedicineformthecoreofanacademichealthcenterthatwillfacilitateinterdisciplinary approachestosolvinghealthcareproblemsintheregionandthenation.Addedto“health”as keycollaborativecontentareasintheFIU2010‐2015StrategicPlanarethearts,environment andglobalizationtosolidifyFIU’spositionasWorldsAhead.Consequently,theRobertStempel CollegeofPublicHealthandSocialWorkisstrategicallyplacedinFIU’splanstoservethe communitybyeducatinghealthprofessionalsandconductingappliedresearchinhealthfields. FloridaInternationalUniversityisanurban,multi‐campus,publicresearchuniversityofferinga broadarrayofundergraduate,graduate,andprofessionalprograms.Theuniversityhastwo maincampuses,the344‐acreModestoA.MaidiquecampusinwesternMiami‐DadeCounty, andthe200‐acreBiscayneBayCampusinnortheastMiami‐DadeCounty.Througheleven collegesandschools,FIUoffers181baccalaureate,Master's,professional,anddoctoraldegree programsandconductsbasicandappliedresearch.Interdisciplinarycentersandinstitutes conductcollaborativeresearchtoseekinnovativesolutionstoeconomic,technological,health andsocialproblems.Withnearly46,000students,over850full‐timeinstructionalfaculty,and over8,000degreesawardedannually,FIUisthelargestuniversityinSouthFlorida.The CarnegieFoundationfortheAdvancementofTeachingclassifiesFIUasaResearch University/HighResearchActivity.Theannualresearchexpendituresexceed$100million. Committedtobothhighqualityandaccess,FIUmeetstheeducationalneedsoffull‐timeand part‐timeundergraduateandgraduatestudents,andlifelonglearners.Reflectingthevibrant ethnicdiversityofSouthFlorida,85%ofFIUstudentsareHispanic,Black,orotherminorities. FIUholdsthedesignationofHispanic‐ServingInstitution.Reflectingtheglobalizationtheme, andaddressingthediversityofourcommunity,FIUmaintainsadiversefacultyandstaffaswell. Itisinthiscontextthatweproposeastrategicplantofacilitatetheimplementationofthe vision,mission,andgoalsoverthenextfiveyears.

Outcome1.1a:80%ofdoctoralstudentswillachievecandidacywithin3yearsof admissionand70%willcompletedissertationswithin9yearsofadmission.
