Generally, each business’ waste will be collected and sorted in order to define the
composition of one week’s volume of waste. Due to time and funding constraints,
composition will be calculated based on all or portions of waste collected for each
business over a one week period. Each business’ waste sampling has been designed
differently, depending on their size, preference dates/times for sampling and waste
service providers. For example, all relatively small sized businesses will have all of
their weekly waste audited. In comparison, some businesses, particularly larger ones
have extremely variable waste over a weekly period. Such businesses will follow the
sample collection outlined below.
Sample Collection
At least 2 staff will be allocated for the collection of samples either once they are
delivered to the landfill site or on the business premises. Collection times will vary
depending on the time the business’ waste contractor collects the waste from the
business premises or opening hours of the business.
Where waste service providers have been employed, the net weight of collected waste
will be calculated as the differential between entrance and exit weights of the waste
collection vehicle at the landfill weigh station. The pile of mixed waste will then be

divided into grids of approximately 1 m

and each grid square assigned a number. A
random number table can then be used to select the grid squares to be sampled. In
cases where the quantity of collected waste is relatively small the entire sample will be
sorted.
Sorting Methodology and Material Identification
A team of audit staff will sort the waste into the general material categories based on
the EPA’s Waste Stream Data Collection Methodologies Material Composition Form.
Audit staff will be introduced to many of the material items during induction. However,
the majority of material category identification training will be learnt around the sorting
table.
Samples are then sorted into various sized containers according to the individual
material categories identified on the material composition form.
The arrangement of
containers for material categories may vary with each sample, depending on the
frequency and volume of a particular material category in each sample.
When the
complete sample is sorted into individual material categories, the samples boxes are
then moved to a separate area for data recording.
Data Recording
All empty sample containers are individually weighed prior to sorting. Throughout the
sort there will usually be two staff members weighing samples. One will be feeding the
material category boxes onto the scales and reading out the material category and the
weight of the empty sample container to be subtracted from the sample container
weight, and then empty the contents into the appropriate bin.
Depending on the
situation at each landfill/transfer station, separate bins will be assigned for mixed
waste, recyclables and/or organics.
The other staff member will be recording the weights and filling in the material
composition form.
All total columns are filled in before moving on to the next sample.
The sample weight is then compared with the weight on the back of the form recorded
prior to sorting.
A calculator is to be used for all calculations; it is also good practice to
double check the figures typed into the calculator.
The completed form is then placed
in a separate ‘completed’ folder for analysis.
Cleaning
At the end of each day, the sorting area is cleaned and swept, the waste sample
containers scrubbed with detergent. The floor usually needs to be swept several times
throughout the day. If it is a particularly windy day, a wind barrier will be arranged.
