Black Bear That is 12 confirmed attacks in total, all occurring in the Rocky Mountains. You can imagine how terrifying it would be to wake up to your head or foot in a bear’s mouth, as some of the victims in those reports did. We feel that, after collecting this information, human-bear conflicts are on the rise compared to past years. It is also safe to conclude that, as bears continue to reclaim their original geographic range, their activity will increase around human property. Grizzlies arebeginning to leave the mountains. Some have been sighted 7 miles East of Cody, WY and in Montana’s rural farmland(unlike black bears, grizzlies were actually common throughout the Great Plains and Desert Regions before the 1870s). They are very adaptable creatures. Is the Bear Electric Fence Worth Buying? Judging by all the material we have presented you, we recommend this product for anyone camping in bear country. An increase in attacks and expansion of geographical range are two good reasons to secure your campsite. And above all else, the most important reason for owning a bear electric fence is the surge in predatory attacks. It has been commonly accepted that mother bears will instinctively react with adrenaline in order to protect their cubs, but predatory attacks are motivated by a search for food. We must look at this behavior to understand the bears’ motivation because a lack of fear for humans might also be a key factor in the increase in the predatory behavior seen in the stories listed above.

Even if the outdoor enthusiast plans on hard-sided camping only (such as an RV, cabin, or camper topper), it is very important to keep food and other attractants out of reach from bears. Among Biologists and Park Rangers, the general consensus is that bears will associate humans with food after they are able to obtain garbage or camping rations. Therefore, keeping food away from bears will protect people who visit an area after you have vacated the wilderness. Does the Bear Electric Fence Work?  Perhaps bears in the wild actually can be trained to avoid human presence, even when food is left sitting on the ground. At first it was hard to believe, butfootage of the fence being testedshows that it keeps bears out of a tent (full of food and attractants) and it even trained the bears to stay clear when it was turned off. This experiment was performed by the National Outdoor Leadership School at the Bear and Wolf Center in West Yellowstone. No one can know for sure what will happen because the bear electric fence is relatively new, and every situation should be handled on an individual basis. Watching the behavior of the grizzlies in the video shows us that getting shocked is not worth the food. The fence may not stop a charging bear full of adrenaline, but it will likely keep them away from the walls of your tent. The goal is to prevent dangerous situations. Getting a tent crushed on top of you quickly diminishes your chances of survival, and being awakened to a bear dragging you into the brush is a worst case scenario.
