Theconceptofaharmonicoscillatorisoneofthebuildingblocksofphysicsand
appearsinvariouscontexts,rangingfromatomictosolidstatephysics,andmany
otherfields.Thepropertiesofharmonicoscillatorsareoftenvisualizedwithme-
chanicaloscillators,whereaharmonicallyboundmassoscillatesaroundapotential
minimum.However,mechanicaloscillatorsarenotonlyusedasanexamplesytem
tostudythepropertiesoftheharmonicoscillatormodel,butconstituteavividfield
ofresearchthemselves.Manyapplicationsofmicro-andnanosizedmechanicalos-
cillatorshavebeeninvestigatedinrecentyearsduetotheirhighsensitivitywith
respecttoforces[1,2],temperaturechanges[3]orthevariationoftheoscillating
mass[4].Eventhespinofasingleelectroninasolidcanbedetectedwithmagnetic
resonanceforcemicroscopy[5].
Themechanicalmodesofsuchoscillatorsarehighlyoccupiedwithphononsina
roomtemperatureenvironment,andthebehaviourofsuchoscillatorscanbede-
scribedclassically.However,manyexperiments[6,7,8,9]haverecentlyachieved
asignificantreductionofthephononnumberoccupationofmechanicalmodes,and
areonthewayto’cool’themotionofasinglemodeofamechanicaloscillatorto
thequantumgroundstate.Incontrasttothemoretraditionalapproach,where
allmechanicalmodesaresimultaneouslycooledbyreducingthethermalbathtem-
perature[10,11,12,13,14],optomechanicalcoolingappliesatechniquewhichis
similartolasercoolingofatoms[15,16].Intheopt
