Communications - Année 2005 - Volume 77 - Numéro 1 - Pages 183-209A ghost has been haunting the global imaginary all throughout the 1990s : the shape of an androgynous, hairless, slim — and blue — body. That is the avatar, the onscreen proxy of the body of the internet users, wired into the incorporeal realms of virtual reality. The rise of this pop icon takes place at the very heart of US and European cyberculture, promptly going mainstream all the way to becoming the Nineties style main feature. This article outlines an historical and geographical mapping of this imaginary construct. Culturally locating the contributions of academic postmodernism, feminism, the New Age movement, comics and pop culture to the building of a mythographic pattern stirring up this blue virtual body, the author displays three cultural borrowing methods : an ironic borrowing (détournement,), an ideological borrowing (propaganda), and an atypical borrowing (substratum interference).
