Christine Peyrard, The Debates on the Right of Association and Assembly under the Directory.
In Messidor Year V, then in Prairial and Thermidor Year VII, the Assemblies of the Directory debated three questions tied to the rights of association and assembly. First, is there a fundamental right to the claims of freedom of association and assembly ? Second, is this freedom comparable to the freedom of the press ? Finally, is it compa- table with the representative régime?
The left was inclined to answer yes to the three questions but its ideal of republican indivisibility caused it to fear that freedom of association would lead to the formation of parties. The right tended to respond no but it admitted that political meetings contributed to the shaping of opinion.

En Messidor an V puis en Prairial et en Thermidor an VII, les assemblées du Directoire débattirent de trois questions liées au droit d'association et de réunion : la revendication de la liberté d'association et de réunion est-elle fondée en droit ? Cette liberté est-elle comparable à celle de la presse ? Est-elle compatible avec le régime représentatif ?
La gauche est tentée de répondre oui aux trois questions mais son idéal d'indivisibilité républicaine lui fait craindre que la liberté d'association conduise à la formation de partis. La droite est tentée de répondre non mais elle admet que les réunions politiques contribuent à façonner l'opinion.

Nel Messidoro dell'anno V, poi nel Pratile e nel Termidoro dell'anno VII, le assemblée del Direttorio dibatterono di tre questioni in rapporto con il diritto di asso- ciazione e di riunione : la rivendicazione della libertà d'associazione e di riunione è fondata in diritto ? Si puô assomigliare questa libertà a quella della stampa ? E compa- tibile con il regime rappresentativo ?
La Sinistra è tentata di rispondere con un si aile tre questioni ma il proprio ideale d' indivisibilità le fa temere che la libertà d'associazione conduca alia formazione di partiti. La Destra è tentata di rispondere con un no ma ammette che le riunioni politiche contribuiscano a formare l'opinione.
