On a si souvent traité de l'analyse formelle des systèmes de parenté impli
quant une règle matrimoniale de type classique — prescription ou refus de la
cousine croisée, matrilatérale ou patrilatérale, mariages obliques, etc.. — que
l'on s'est peu étendu sur d'autres systèmes, pourtant bien vivants, et qui
n'ont d'autres prescriptions que négatives : épouser n'importe quelle femme
pourvu qu'elle soit en dehors de la parenté. Nous en connaissons deux . cas
aux Nouvelles-Hébrides, celui qui correspond à l'aire qui s'étend de Vate
(Efate), au sud, à la pointe sud-est d'Epi comprise, au nord, et celui de la
population dite des Big Nambas au nord de Malekula.
VATE-SHEPHERD
De la première aire considérée, le premier relevé connu est celui du mis
sionnaire presbytérien Peter Milne sur Nguna, remontant au début du siècle
et élaboré en réponse au questionnaire du Royal Anthropological Institute of
Great Britain and Ireland, relevé obtenu par la gentillesse de Barbara Lane
et du Professeur Capell de Sydney. Le texte est transcrit ci-après, étant
donné l'intérêt de ce document ancien. Nous avons obtenu, au même point,
c'est-à-dire au village de Tukilasoa, sur l'île de Nguna, une généalogie et un
système de parenté. Nous donnons ci-dessous ce système en mettant en parall
èle les concordances ou les différences avec l'information reçue de Peter Milne.

1. Tukilasoa semble établir ici une assimilation entre les générations qui n'existe pas a Mau et Lelepa.
On n'a pu vérifier ce qui se passait à la troisième descendante.
2. C'est ici la situation résultant normalement d'un mariage avec échange de sœurs.
3. Compté par Milne comme marna — pour John Mariwota, dit marna à Ego et au FP.
4. Non mariable, comptée par Milne comme tètè.

1. Is native society divided into two sections or more? Name them.
Native follows the totem system of which there are many e.g. fatu,
stone ; nawi, yam ; naika, fish ; natale, taro ; naniu, cocoanut ; nadri, banana ; malu,
kind of yam ; wita, octopus ; karau, clam shell ; marae, sea eel ; napatau, breadfruit ;
napanga, banyan tree ; noasi, cabbage ; napu, wild yam ; naita, wild fig ; kusue, rat ;
makadu, wild yam.
2. Must a man marry outside his own section? Outside his village?
A man or woman must marry outside his or her own totem. A man may marry
either in or outside his own village, it does not matter as long as it is outside his
own totem.
3. Does the bride come to her husband's village or he go to hers?
It does not matter which, sometimes one, sometimes the other, it depends on
circumstances.
4. Whom should a man marry? His cross cousin, or what other affinal?
A man may marry any one he likes so long as the woman does not belong to
his totem, nor is a blood relation, however far removed.
5. What happens to a widow?
In heathen days she was buried alive with her husband. Now she may marry
anyone she likes according to question 4. Does a man marry his mother's brother's
widow? Never.
6. Is it permissable to marry father's sister's daughter or mother's brother's
daughter, or only one of these, or neither ?
It is not to marry any of these.
7. Do brothers and sisters avoid each other? No.
