1. Introduction

Enantiomerically pure molecules are among the most valuable key intermediates for the
[1]preparation of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, flavors and advanced materials . The
immense need for optically pure compounds arises from the effect that, in biologically
processes, in most cases only enantiomers having the proper configuration interact in
the desired manner with the receptor sites of chiral host molecules. The most
convincing example of the relationship between pharmacological activity and molecular
chirality was shown by the application of the racemic mixture of Thalidomide; the R
enantiomer revealed the desired sedative properties, while (S)-Thalidomide was found
[2]to be extremely teratogenic .

Against this background, the asymmetric synthesis of optically pure compounds
became one of the most important and challenging fields of interest in modern organic
chemistry. In particular, the use of transition metal complexes as catalysts in
enantioselective transformations of prochiral substrates offered a very versatile tool to
achieve products provided with high enantiomeric purity.
