The city of Liège has been chosen to host the International Conference on the
"Control of the Semi-Rigid Behaviour of Civil Engineering Structural Connections".
This Conference, aimed at being the closure event of the COST C1 Action, took
place on 17-19 September 1998 at the University of Liège.
I do hope that the hundred participants, who came from 22 countries, enjoyed their
stay in Liège and got a scientific and technical benefit from their attendance.
On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee, I am especially thankful to
Mr N.NEWMAN, Head of the COST Unit at the European Union, who attended the
Introduction session and delivered a short address to the audience. The presence of
five overseas guest speakers - John STANTON, Roberto LEON, Ian SMITH, Hirushi
AKIYAMA and Peter ANSOURIAN - was also much appreciated. The success of the
Conference was due to the activities developed intensively all along the last eight
years by the members of the seven Task Working Groups under the supervision of
the chairmen of these groups.
The Organizing Committee is very thankful to the European Commission for its
substantial financial support of the event. Also financial contributions received from
the Belgian National Foundation for Scientific research, the University of Liège, the
Ministry of the French-speaking Community of Belgium, CBLIA and SECO Office are
deeply acknowledged.
The editor is sincerely appreciative of the help and assistance received from some
members of the Department MSM when preparing and holding the Conference.
Special thanks are addressed to Mrs J. HUBERT and O VERBIST, who were in
charge of the secretariat and the administrative management.
Last but not least, special gratitude is to Prof. A. COLSON and Mr J. JANSS,
respectively Chairman and Technical Secretary of the COST C1 Action, who
maintained the vital creative interaction between the European Commission and the
actors all along the COST C1 Action.
This volume of proceedings comprises the preface by the chairman of COST C1 and
the papers presented at the Conference.
