Instant-Activity Kits Create a Folder for Your New
Classroom Suite includes 30 instant-activity kits. Each Activities

The Parts of a Set Template can be used to create new

pictures on each page in response to the problem on

Parts of a Set Tutorial 1Part 1: Exploring the Parts of a Set Activity
Opening Parts of a Set
1. Sign in to Classroom Suite as a Teacher (see
Getting Started in the Classroom Suite binder). The
Navigation Screen displays.
2. Click the New button.
3. Open the Math Templates folder.
4. Open Fractions–Parts of a Set. Open Parts of a Set.
Exploring Parts of a Set
The opening page of Parts of a Set includes a set of
animals, a question, and a box into which students will
place a fraction bar. Notice the toolbar at the top of the
page. This toolbar contains tools to help students
navigate through the pages of the activity, save their
work, and hear the problems read aloud on each page.
The toolbar at the bottom is used to place fraction bars
on the page and manipulate them.
1. Click the green Directions button. Notice that the
problem is read aloud. The text box is locked, and
students will not be able to change this text.
2. Look at the set of animals on the right half of the
page. Count the number of animals to determine
the size of the set.
3. Click the Make Fraction button at the bottom of the
page.
4. Use the Increase Denominator button to show the
number of animals in the set (5). The fraction bar
reads the fraction aloud as you make changes.
5. Click the Increase Numerator button to represent
how many of the animals in the set live on a farm
(3).
6. Click the Check Work button. Notice that student
responses are being recorded. The Check Work
feature provides feedback to students as they work.
7. Use the Next Page button to scroll through the
remaining pages in this activity and to see the
variety of sets of animals.
8. Close the activity without saving it.
In the next sections of the tutorial, you will learn to use
the Parts of a Set Template to create similar activities,
using graphics provided with the template, available in
the Picture Library, or from your own graphics.
2 Parts of a Set TutorialPart 2: Using the Parts of a Set Template
This template can be used to create fractions problem
sets. Students analyze the pictures on each page in
response to questions about the parts of that set. They
place fraction bars on the page to respond to the
questions. Check Work enables students to get
feedback on their understanding of the math concepts.
Five sets of pictures have been provided, or you can
import your own
Opening the Parts of a Set Template
1. From the Navigation Screen, click the New button.
2. Open the Math Templates folder.
3. Open Fractions–Parts of a Set and choose Parts of
a Set Template.
Duplicating Pages
1. The Parts of a Set Template opens with two
toolbars at the top of the page. The top toolbar is
the Authoring toolbar, designed to help you use the
template. The second is the student toolbar. The
fractions toolbar is at the bottom of the page.
2. Click the yellow Authoring Instructions button to
display on-screen instructions. You can refer to
these instructions at any time while you work on
your activity, by clicking the yellow Authoring
Instructions button.
3. Click the blue Home button to go to page #1 of the
activity.
4. Decide how many pages you want in your activity.
Ten is a good starting number.
5. Click the Duplicate Page button 9 times.
6. Click the Home button to return to page #1.
Now you are ready to begin creating the problems and
sets of animals on each page.
Parts of a Set Tutoriall 3Part 2: Using the Parts of a Set Template
Creating an Animal Set
1. Select a category from the toolbar at the bottom of
the page. Categories include Land Animals, Ocean
Animals, Insects, Birds, and Dinosaurs.
2. Pictures of animals in your chosen category will
appear at the bottom of the page. To change
categories, click the pink Categories button at the
upper right of the page.
3. Click animals from your chosen category and place
them in the Counting Box at the right of the page.
You can mix animals from different categories in
the same Counting Box. Use the pink CategoriesNote
button to access different sets of animals.
Creating a Question
Now you will create a question related to the set of
animals you have created. Refer to the Parts of a Set
activity for ideas.
1. Type the problem into the yellow text box.
2. When you have finished entering the problem hold
down the Control key on the computer and
simultaneously click the text box ([Ctrl]+click).
