Actions Panel— A list of options for components you can insert into your document. Depending on what is currently selected, the Insert Actions will display what you can add as a child, insert above, append, or replace. There are rendundant ways of accessing the Insert Actions (Insert Actions Pane, right click menu, toolbar).
Assign To— A workflow feature that allows you to assign a content creation task to be done in Xyleme Forms. When you assign a task, system will notify the user via email. The user assigned the task opens the assigned document by clicking a link in an email. The system opens the assigned document in Xyleme Forms. When the task is complete, you "Mark Complete" and the task is re-routed.
Checkin/out— A function that gives you exclusive editing privileges for the selected object only. It will not check out the children of this object. For example, if you Check Out a book, it will not check out the chapters. You can change the order of the chapters, and add or delete chapters.
Check-out All— A function that will give you exclusive editing privileges to the selected object, plus all of its children objects. For example, if you Check-Out All a book, the system will check out the book node, and all of this chapters and topics.
Content Management Services— Each managed object is content managed. Each managed object can be individually opened, edited, checked -in/out, versioned, enriched with metadata, and assigned to a SME or reviewer.
Java Web Start— A server technology that manages the download of applications to your desktop and will automatically update your application when there are changes.
Managed Objectof a virtual document that is a full-fledged object that receives— Part all the system's content management services. Each managed object can be individually opened, edited, checked -in/out, versioned, enriched with metadata, and assigned to a SME or reviewer. A managed object in Xyleme is denoted by a cube ().
Media Import Wizard— A wizard that guides the user through the steps to select media from a local system and copy it to the server.
Multi-Channel Publishing— The ability to publish XML content to multiple document types and formats. For example, the Xyleme system ships with an Instructional Design authoring template will generate classroom materials (Instructor/Student Guides, Slide Presentations, Exams), eLearning (SCORM 1.2 & 2004), on-line assessments, and performance support materials.
Multi-rendition Media ObjectAn object that contains multiple renditions appropriate— for different delivery media. A media object can store a print, web, wireless, 508c, and source renditions such that when the media object is used within a print publication, the print rendition is used. Or when the media object is used in a web publication, the web rendition is used and so on.
Glossary of Terms
Preview Preview Modethe user previews a document (pdf, web,— An editing mode where SCORM) and can click on a link in the margin to open a specific managed object in Studio.
Repository Explorer— The Repository Explorer provides access to the documents in the database. From the Repository Explorer, you can open documents in the editor, preview/publish, perform content management functions (checkin/out, version, metadata, where used), and manage workflow. There are no folders in Xyleme. You construct views of the repository by creating queries. Search results provide views of the documents.
Review Session— A component of Xyleme's workflow features. When a review session is started for a document, the system locks the document so that everyone is reviewing the same version. One or more reviewers are assigned to review the selected document and the system generates and email. Reviewers view PDF or HTML renditions of the content and submit comments via a web form. The editor can end the review session and see a comments reports and take action based on the feedback.
Root Document— A document that was either created from a File
SCORM— A packaging standard for eLearning courseware that allows an LMS to launch, track, and sequence the flow of th courseware. Xyleme is SCORM 2004 certified platform that allow you to author and publish to the SCORM 1.2 and 2004 package standards.
Single Source Publishing— The ability author content once, and render it to multiple output types and formats.
Structured Editing Mode— An editing mode in the Xyleme XML editor where you see the XML structure and content together
Structured Writing— Structured writing follows a template. In this style of writing you focus on the content and not the presentation. This approach increases the productivity of the writer as they don't spend time formatting the content and don't have to invent the document structure for each writing project. It benefits the learner/reader because the content is presented in a consistent manner allowing the user to more easily navigate and find what they need.
Styled Editing Mode— An editing mode in the Xyleme editor where the XML content in the editing pane is styled making it easier to read.
Template Configuration— The configuration of authoring and publishing templates used by an instance of Xyleme LCMS. The system is flexible and its authoring and publishing templates can be adapted to meet specific requirements.
Virtual Documentdocument composed of reusable managed parts. For example a book— A is composed of reusable chapters and the chapters are composed of reusable topics. Each part of the virtual document is a self-contained document and can be individually managed and assigned to a workflow.
Virtual Document Versioningyou version a virtual document, the system will— When capture a "snap shot" of the configuration of the virtual document. For example, you might have a book where chapter 1 is version 3, and chapter 2 is version 5.
