The problem of spelling is again back with us. A series of recent works enable us to assess linguistic and sociological problems. It seems on the one hand that spelling is not getting lost, and that in that case as well the level is increasing. Then that if one drops the idea of radical reform, it becomes urgent to find out how moderate reform (« modernization ») could rely on a usage dimension, and how the last could be studied objectively.
