Robert Morin: « The cuckoo, the nightingale and the ass » — Paradox or Truth?
Diderot's account, in a letter to Sophie, of a dispute between Grimm and Le Roy concerning the respective merits of genius and method, resolved by Galiani's parable of the cuckoo, the nightingale and the ass, can be interpreted in various ways. The author here insists on the importance in Diderot's thought of structure which is necessary for all creation.
