PREPACE 1 > / This volume is one of a series of surveys commissioned by the European Foundation in Dublin concerning the structure and functioning of the insti­tutions responsible for the implementation of legislation on safety and health protection at the work place in the nine member States. The purpose of these surveys was to obtain as much information as possible on current legislation, on the importance given to problems of safety and health in collective bargaining, on various monitoring functions (such as the enforcement of health and safety laws, medical checks, and technical inspection) and on measures aimed at fostering awareness of health and safety problems (through research, training and information). In addition, the research was aimed at identifying the socio-cultural factors which have contributed to changes in the institutions responsible for implementing the legislation and in the legislation itself.
