PREFACE
This volume contains the results of bibliographical work commissioned at the
end of 1982 by the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and
Working Conditions in Dublin. It is intended that this analysis of literature
on the influence of worker participation in the improvement of working
conditions be seen as a supplement to the research work of the Foundation
which has examined the role of the various parties concerned in
decision-making within enterprises.
The work was subject to contraints, both budgetary and temporal, and we wish
to express our thanks to the researchers who contributed to this work at
relatively short notice. It was these contraints which led to the Irish
literature being covered by a U.K.- based institute, albeit with local
assistance, and to the impossibility on this occasion of including an analysis
of the literature in France.
Despite these limitations it is hoped that this work will prove useful to both
theoreticians and practitioners in the field of worker participation. As in
any bibliography the choice of texts for inclusion remains a subjective one,
notwithstanding the criteria laid down for their selection. The volume of
literature in this field is enormous and the researchers who contributed had
only a short time to complete their task.
The Foundation wishes to stress that the analysis and opinions contained in
this volume are the sole responsibility of the authors, both of the texts
quoted and of the commentaries on the national and international situations,
and do not necessarily reflect the official views of the European Foundation.
This volume was approved for publication by the Reading Committee of the
Administrative Board in January 1985. INTRODUCTION
