Every str cture must have a suitable foundation Float ing structures such Ships built on temporary found tions called slipsWen completed they then launched or per tted to slide into the water Wely a temporary foundation for thehile the Slip is p Shipu ually isduring constr ction it per anent in itself may used for many Ships The Slip usually consists of a very strong rangement ofpth heavcapped and decked over iling suitably planks The decking of the slips rves a work ngplat form under the ShipSince the ship must be launched into the water it is necessa y for end launchings to build the Slip on an incline which Slopes downward toward the water This Slope is usu l y about to of an ch to the foot to of an inch of fall to one foot of length The keel blocks are arranged topTheof the Slip y serve to carr the weight of the ship to obtain the proper worki g room between the Ship s bottom and the slip Keel blocks must be so built as to be easily removed j ust befo e the Ship is launched The keel is the st piece in any Ship to be assembled in the buildingSlip and since the keel blocks form the fo ndation proper for the keel it is necess r to have them place before the keel can be laid
