Description

Hani, the hippo, believed happiness was dependent on her talent. Until one day, Hani discovered that happiness is dependent on her choices.

Happy as a Hippo is about a young hippopotamus’ journey to find happiness. Hani, the hippo, believed happiness was found in outward appearances, abilities, and possessions. However, Hani soon finds out happiness is not dependent on what we have, it is found in who we are. Happiness is knowing you are fearfully and wonderfully made.

To Avery, Boston, and Harper. Remember, you are fearfully and wonderfully made. When faced with a choice, choose happy. We love you.

There once was a hippo. A hippo named Hani. Hani was a very unhappy hippo. Which did not make sense because she had everything a hippo would need to be happy. She had a comfortable bed, a warm bath, a beautiful house, and a loving family. But today she wasn’t happy.
The next day, Hani wanted to be happy like her friend Zeb the Zebra. She believed that if she had stripes too, she would be happy.
So, Hani grabbed a brush and painted and painted until she had stripes just like Zeb.
But she still wasn’t happy.
The next day, Hani wanted to be happy like her friend Chelsea the Cheetah. She believed that if she could run fast too, she would be happy.
So, Hani went to the track and trained and trained until she was faster just like Chelsea.
But she still wasn’t happy.
The next day, Hani wanted to be happy like her friend Rusty the Rhino. She believed that if she could be calm too, she would be happy.
So, Hani went to the spa and rested and rested until she was calm just like Rusty.
But she still wasn’t happy.
The next day, Hani wanted to be happy like her friend Emma the Elephant. She believed that if she was smart too, she would be happy.
So, Hani went to school and studied and studied until she got straight A’s just like Emma.
But she still wasn’t happy.
The next day, Hani wanted to be happy like her friend Liam the Lion. She believed that if she had a head full of hair too, she would be happy.
So, Hani let her hair grow and grow until it was thick and long just like Liam’s.
But she still wasn’t happy.
The next day, Hani wanted to be happy like her friend Griffin the Giraffe. She believed that if she was tall too, she would be happy.
So, Hani made stilts so she could stand higher and higher until she was tall just like Griffin.
But she still wasn’t happy.
The next day, Hani wanted to be happy like her friend Olivia the Ostrich. She believed that if she could bury her head too, she would be happy.
So, Hani got a shovel and dug and dug until she was underground just like Olivia.
But she still wasn’t happy.
The next day, Hani wanted to be happy like her friend Chase the Chimpanzee. She believed that if she could swing from tree to tree too, she would be happy.
So, Hani went to the jungle and practiced and practiced until she could swing just like Chase.
But she still wasn’t happy.
And then one day, Hani woke up and something was different. She didn’t need to be tall, or fast, or relaxed, or have a lot of hair. She didn’t need any of those things. She realized she already had everything she needed to be happy, and that happiness was a choice. She had a comfortable bed, a warm bath, a beautiful house, a loving family, and many friends. So, Hani chose to be happy just as she was.
Hani was happy. Happy as a hippo.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
