Description

‘‘I hear a distant noise, Here and there, And in the silence of despair I cry your name, I shout, I sweat. And people look at me and fret: They ask me what is wrong with me But your love has caught me, Can they not see it? I find no way and yet, I hope To be with you, My heart my goals has set.'' Caught in love was inspired by Eliane R, a young Columbian woman with whom Angel T. M. Martinez deeply fell in love. Depicting the permanent struggle of two Columbians exposed to the violence of their country, theses poems explore an impossible and unreachable love, true fantasy that will remain illusion forever.

Translated from Spanish by Stella Dubarova Stoyanova

Dedicated to Eliana Ramirez Incapie

Even when you are on the other side of the world, By daylight or in the moonshine, I love you like no other.
Friends You Have, You Say
No, do not tell me about friends
Better leave me by myself
I have clearly no intent
To spend time with the indecent.

You have friends, you say
Who love you as one of their own
Facing your problems, they
Are suddenly not to be found.

My friends I never
Call them friends, you know?
For on rainy days
They always leave me alone.

My so-called friends they
Work to get by
When I seek help
They just tell me to relax.

Go out, have fun, they say,
Find yourself a good woman.
Why keep this sullen face?
Why so serious all of a sudden?

I have not been a vain man,
You see?
A serious man, that is me.
Do not play with fire
Your little games they
Do not work on me.

Only one I call real friend.
The one whose face you see.
By my side he remains
Ashore and on the open sea.

My friend, my brother,
A man of word and will.
And at the smallest bother
A helping hand indeed.

If bad luck strikes me
While he is away,
I tell him when he comes back
He saves each rainy day!

Honey-Sweet
Sweet lady of honey lips
Like ripe fruit, how I wish
To feel your kiss
To savour your sweetness.

Your smile reminds me
Of a sweet cherry blossom
Your eyes so captivating
Let them look at me gladly!

Your gracious silhouette
Sparkles like thousand stars
And there you are, yet
Again, the prettiest of all.

I see you pass and I
Lose my mind, my words
Won’t come out.
I want to walk by your side.

If I could fly,
Or spread my wings
To reach you,
I would come to you, my love.

And every time I see you
I faint before your beauty
How I’d love to caress you dear
At night, at day, always with you.

And let people speak
As they wish.
My winter, my summer,
You will always be.

And everything I do,
I do out of love to you!

ELIANA.

A Solemn Morning
Amidst the hours of a
Solemn morning I was
Thinking how it’d feel
To have you by my side, love.

There I was, in your arms
Caressing you gently
But oh, it was but a dream
The fruit of my imagination.

And thus I saw that I was dreaming
A slave to my illusions, gleaming
Hopelessly caught in my own delusions.
Of loving you so dearly.

I jumped out of bed, confused
Calling your name,
My gentle darling, tell me,
Where have I lost you?

Thus passed the night and
A beautiful day came to follow.
I started thinking about my sorrow
That you no longer love me dear.

The negativity was mantling
And armed with restless turmoil
The selfishness sprang out of me
And I denied your love.

But there I see you pass by
And my heart sinks with sorrow.
For I still love you dearly, darling,
And I’ll love you too tomorrow.

I have tried so hard and still
I can’t accept to
Live without your love.
What do I do to get close to you?

I only ask one chance
One opportune moment
To touch your hands
To feel your lips on mine.

For Your Love
You come to mind and I
Forget my pride.
I want to rush to you,
Be by your side.

Your love enchanted me
And here I am ready to do
Everything for you;
No one will take your place.

The fresh breeze carries to me
The sweet aroma of your body;
The sand shines along the shores
And your love, my queen, I wish for.

I love only you, and please
Do not feel deceived if
No one else my heart perceives
Like you, my only one.

I stand firmly by my words,
For my heart has so decided;
Your name will remain embroidered
In it forever. You and I united.

ELIANA RAMIREZ

I saw you pass by
At a sunset she passed by
Swarthy lady before red skies;
Such a woman the eye will see
But once in a life.

A glimpse of her beauty
Left me astounded.
There she walked
With her man.

A gift from Heaven
Is this lady
And for her, one
Chooses war.

War it is I choose
For whoever is with her today
Will not consent for this lady
To be with another.

You should know,
For her I’d fight
Till the end of both
My time and might.

I Cannot Forget You
Every time my heart sinks in sorrow
My eyes look up to the sun.
There I see it, at first hollow
Then much deeper, the love you shun.

Shun my love, like sun, like moon,
No one else but you I love, come soon.
At daytime I seek to see the skies
And at night the shining stars.

My heart beckons at the woman,
Who is to me the prettiest of all.
I only ask of you, my queen,
Be fair with me, my faith redeem.

I will never cause you pain
Let our love our lives sustain;
Let the others speak as they please
They will never know how it feels.

To love each other like we do.
And for that I’d give my life too,
For in Heaven your love
Will find me anew.

And you should know,
My boundless love
Will grant you my life
Thus I love you, little dove.

Your presence, your aroma
They are my devotion.
Your name is written
In my heart.

ELIANA RAMIREZ.

How Will I Know
Pretty Golden woman
Come, tell me your worries;
Let us talk about it;
I will hear your story.

Why do you want to know
What is troubling my mind is?
Who are you to solve
The problems of the others?
If I share my worries
They will but burden yours
