Foreword
The spontaneous overflow of feelings; it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility.
William Wordsworth
In the United States, the month of April is both National Poetry Month and Stress Awareness Month. It is in those two seemingly disparate things that harmony can be found. When K.S. Dwyer penned Poetry for Peace , he wasn’t considering the use of poetry in a clinical sense. Rather, intuitively inherently he understood that when reading poetry, especially poems focused on fostering a peaceful mindset one’s heartbeat slows, one’s blood pressure lowers, and one’s breathing regulates. To that end, this second edition of Poetry for Peace has been reconfigured so that it presents as an interactive workbook, designed to encourage the reader to consider reflections, inspiration, gratitude, aspiration, and meditation through the lens of poetry.
There is a recent rise in scholarship regarding the physical and mental benefits of poetry. Psychology Today states, "Writing and reading poetry can be a springboard for growth, healing, and transformation." Immersing oneself in poetry allows the reader to connect with their own subconscious and has a stripping-away effect, laying bare the emotion at the core of every experience. Put simply: "Poems reflect the voice of the soul." 1
Poetry therapy, a growing field, is at the forefront of the treatment of mental health for those processing traumatic experiences, grief, or other stress. The National Board for Certified Counselors uses terms like "somatic experiences," "cognitive, verbal consciousness," and "bilateral brain reactivation and integration" that allow for those undergoing poetry therapy to process and examine their trauma. In simpler terms, the uncluttered nature of poetry allows one to get to the heart of the matter, examine it from all sides, and process an experience through "meaning making." 2 To wit: poetry allows us to find meaning in those things we have experienced both good and bad.
Unlike prose, poetry requires something from the reader. With all pretense and affectation removed, poetry calls the reader to provide the context, to turn over the words as if they are weather-beaten rocks, and to discover the meaning hidden beneath. But poetry also offers a reward for this work. When faced with emotions laid bare on a page, we are given the gift of confronting our true selves. And in so doing, we may find peace.
Poetry for Peace is both a collection of poems that explores the ways in which we can shift our perspective to find peace and offer comfort, and a call to action, a workbook readers can use to examine their own search for peace among the overscheduled, overburdened, overwrought lives we often lead. Meant to be kept within easy reach, Poetry for Peace is both a salve and a tool, a map guiding the way, a light on our path to peace. Use it to look within and to tap into the "voice of the soul" that poetry unleashes within all of us.

Introduction
There are always times when we need to pause the sounds and busyness of our day-to-day lives. Poetry for Peace is an ideal way to allow our minds to do just that. The words of this book and the poems contained herein will bring a peace to your soul and a greater calmness to your heart.
Let the laws of attraction continue to work by feeding your soul with peaceful thoughts and moments. Enjoy your time, find peace in your journey, and focus on the here and now. Then, if even one poem or one thought is helpful, you have begun an incredible journey. Peace can and will bring prosperity in many different ways.
Pursue all that an increase of peace has to offer. Many studies reflect that creativity and longevity increase through peace, mindfulness, and meditation. When we undertake a purpose higher than ourselves and offer service to another, we often find the answers we have been looking for. Now is the time to open that door. Peace and abundance are waiting.

Cool, Brisk Waves
Brisk, free ocean waves spoke to my soul today. 1
The words, although not heard by my ears alone.
The cool, brisk waves spoke to my heart and soul
in a healing way.
As the day passed by, I began to feel what
the ocean waves were trying to say.
Let not the troubles of yesterday keep you
from the healing, happy waves of today.
The time began to pass by; soon I felt
the water calm my entire presence.
I had known good fortune that
would not be forgotten.
Now I take the time to ride each wave
with grateful strides.
When the time comes to depart, the ocean’s waves have given me a fresh, new start.
It was true, the waves spoke to my soul.
And with each new ride, the sound of the ocean and the deep blue spoke to my soul.
Oh, how true.
Should the time arise again when all seems lost or dismayed, I believe
I will head for the ocean. That is what I pray.
When I ride the crisp, blue, healing ocean waves, my soul gives thanks for each new day. 2

You Are Not Alone
You are not alone. Look at the tree; it has leaves. Look at the flower; it has many petals.
You are not alone.
There are many who have felt the darkness. 3
But remember, you are not alone.
Change can come quickly if you but remember
that we are not alone.
Seek out that person or make that call and remember, you are not alone. 4
There is strength in numbers, so please believe me when I say, you are not alone today.
Seek what is right. Seek a new flight.
Remember, you are not alone, and with help, choose the right.

Learning To Pray
In the midst of poverty, I prayed for wealth.
In the stress of a burden, I prayed for relief.
In the midst of sorrow, I prayed for peace.
In the midst of illness, I prayed for health.
In the midst of silence, I prayed.
In all these I prayed only for
love, kindness, and wisdom. 5
I was blessed with talents to acquire.
I was blessed with strength to overcome.
I was blessed with healing.
I was blessed with time.
I was blessed with understanding.
I was blessed with love.
I found gratitude.
I was blessed with courage.
I am learning to pray. 6

The Work Of An Angel
Angels do more than help in times of need. 7
The feeling they bring is quite different indeed.
They are all around and in your darkest hour, you can find their love and their healing power.
Oh, but if I were an angel, what unseen help I could do.
But, wait just a moment; I can be an angel too. 8
The work of an angel is a must; if I but listen to the spirit and learn to trust.
There are angels all around,
so take a silent moment,
and with good works they shall be found.
