Description

Jackson Namibia is a typical middle grade schooler who dreads not only his first day of school, but the "crime spree three".

A group of rough and tough students he gave that name to last year. We follow along as Jackson enters a new school year and is faced with the scariest, most overwhelming task he has ever taken on, standing up for himself. But defending himself and his friends from bullies aren't his biggest obstacles, believing in himself is. We watch as he enters a competition that challenges more than his popularity, but the very impression Jackson has of himself. He meets some pretty big feelings as he realizes he already possess all of the qualities to overcome the very thing he is afraid to do.

This heartwarming tale about courage in the face of anxiety, fear and doubt takes us on a wild ride as he flops between finding the courage to win the biggest contest he's ever been in or the chances of him just landing flat on his face. "Jackson Speaks is a captivating and appealing story about conquering difference. The powerful embedded strategies will support and transform the reader's self-doubt to self-confidence."

 - Gloriane R. Smith, Literacy Program Manager

"Nickerson eloquently presents the reader with topics and events parent, students and educators encounter today, more than ever before in the educational setting. I am particularly impressed and thrilled about the importance placed on parents support of their child's emotional needs throughout the story. As a school counselor, I will certainly use this book to guide small group lessons with students; discussing themes such as bullying, having a growth mindset, positive self-estem and relevance in their lives."

THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY
My name is Nakeshia Nickerson, during my studies of psychology at The Ohio State University I felt a tremendous call on my life to write stories for children, but not just any stories – stories that are meaningful - that teach essential life skills we all need as we grow. Life skills that have the ability to change the trajectory of a loved one’s life, yet many times aren’t learned until well into a persons adult years. I understood this impact early on and became determined to make a huge change to that, and so, The Little Boots Grow Book and Journal Club was created.
The Little Boots Grow Book and Journal Club follows a group of friends as they grow together living on a street called Tulvia Lane. The stories follow along in the adventures of each friend as they experience different backgrounds, different genders and different lifestyles – and it’s their friendship that supports them through it all. This series feature lots of fun as these friends navigate childhood and friendship while learning some deep life-lessons that will benefit them for decades to come. Spoiler alert – these lessons are just as much for adults as they are for adolescents. In order for our children to shine bright in their lives, they have to have a certain level of knowledge of all the topics the Little Boots Grow Club teach.

“ …a engaging and wonderful story about learning all the things you can overcome. ”

For J.F., the little Angel who reminded me of my purpose.
And for all the children in the world who’ve dealt with childhood adversity, bullying, automatic negative self-talk, low self-esteem, illness, or abuse.
Those who can still dream through it all. This book is for you.
Always – N.N.

CHAPTER 1
First Day of School Says It All
There isn’t much to say about today, except that it’s the first day of school. And since last school year was the absolute worst, I’m not expecting this year to be any different. Walking through the doors, I see the same bullies, popular kids and super smart kids are all at their lockers laughing and joking, taking up all the attention. I mean, I guess I would too if I were them. But since I am just me, the invincible one; there isn’t anything I can do to change it. So, I drag my feet and my book bag to my locker, hoping the end of the day bell is the next thing I hear. Instead, the next thing I hear, is a girl named Jia, a skinny girl with curly hair bigger than her face. And she skips over toward me. Turning as quick as I can, to head in the other direction, I fumble all my things and drop them to the floor. Ugh!
“Hey, Jackson, how was your summer?” she asks, smiling this annoyingly huge smile at me.
“Hey, Jia, it was cool,” I reply, still avoiding her behind my locker door. She’s always been a pretty nice person, so I don’t know why I’m acting this way toward her. Maybe it’s because it’s just the first day of school, and I just don’t really want to talk to anyone.
“Here!” she said, shoving a half-crumbled piece of paper into my shoulder.
“What’s this?”
“This, Jackson, is just what you need!”
“Need? Why do I need this?”
“You’ll see, Jack, you’ll see”
Jia then skips away just as fast as she came. I am sure she’s on her way to find someone else to bother with an overdose of happiness. She’s sort of shy usually, except when she’s being the editor of the school newspaper, where she spends most of her time.
“Let go of me, Chuck!” Jia screams from down the hall.
“OK, you asked for it,” Chuck Worsenthal says. He is this huge block head and is mocking Jia, while shoving her with arms as big as tree trunks. Papers are flying everywhere! They are in the air and all over the floor. Before I even know it, Jia falls hard to the floor.
A crowd gathers and circles around them almost instantly, some laugh and the rest give Chuck a high five. They’re squawking “yeah get that geek.” Many students gasp, shaking their heads at what’s happening. Others are just standing there, waiting to see what happens next.
As for me, I can’t believe what I am seeing. I mean—I was just talking to her! Feeling disgusted, I slam my locker shut, throw my books down, take a deep breath, and leap into action. I charge forward through the crowd, moving people, pushing them left and right, side to side, and one by
