Description

This story is autobiographical in the sense that it is based on a true story. The characters, animals and places are real, but the story is in part a product of the author’s imagination as a five-year-old boy.

Our farm life in the Wimmera, western Victoria, was sometimes hard, with lots of chores, but it was always full of love, music, laughter, and adventure.
I dedicate this story to my wonderful mother and father (Muriel and Jim), to my big brother Neville, and my sister Shirley.

My Dad said that I could have a new load of sand for my sandpit.
My sandpit was just outside the side gate to our house.
We harnessed up Toby, my Pa’s draught horse, into the cart.
My brother Neville and I sat on a wooden plank, with our Dad who held the reins.
Swanee, our sheep dog, slept at our feet.
