Sample Book Insights:
#1 I am out of clean clothes, I cannot find my glasses, my English paper is late, and my pockets are not big enough for all the heroin I have. But I want a cigarette more than anything. I am only ten minutes from where I’m going, and it’s cold outside.
#2 I like to be prepared for when I might need more heroin. I leave behind the small digital scale, assorted pills, and my backpack of schoolwork. But then the drugs kick in, and I accidentally nod out for an hour or so in the bathroom.
#3 I was arrested for drug possession, and while I was handcuffed and in the back seat of the police car, the pills I had swallowed began to kick in. I was seventeen and alone, sitting on a cement step somewhere around Brattle Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
#4 I am tightly wound, a taut rubber band of perfectionism and self-destruction. I am about to make things worse. I have been too out of it to pay attention to my surroundings, and I’ve lost my glasses, anyway, further blurring the corners of this unfamiliar world.

Insights from Chapter 1

#1

I am out of clean clothes, I cannot find my glasses, my English paper is late, and my pockets are not big enough for all the heroin I have. But I want a cigarette more than anything. I am only ten minutes from where I’m going, and it’s cold outside.

#2

I like to be prepared for when I might need more heroin. I leave behind the small digital scale, assorted pills, and my backpack of schoolwork. But then the drugs kick in, and I accidentally nod out for an hour or so in the bathroom.

#3

I was arrested for drug possession, and while I was handcuffed and in the back seat of the police car, the pills I had swallowed began to kick in. I was seventeen and alone, sitting on a cement step somewhere around Brattle Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

#4

I am tightly wound, a taut rubber band of perfectionism and self-destruction. I am about to make things worse. I have been too out of it to pay attention to my surroundings, and I’ve lost my glasses, anyway, further blurring the corners of this unfamiliar world.

#5

I wish that the me nodding out in a cold cinderblock cell could see ahead five years, or even ten. I wish that she could see herself getting out of prison, getting sober, and finally finishing those college papers.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

I was arrested for drug possession, and the media coverage that followed was extensive. I had a dark side, and it had been obvious for as long as I can remember. I had been overachieving and talkative, but not stable.

#2

I was a competitive child who loved to win. I was also extremely stubborn, and would not stop doing something I knew was wrong. I was yelled at twice for reading books under my desk.

#3

I was not popular in school, and I did not make friends easily. I was smart and athletic, but not in the cool way. I talked incessantly at adults, but was completely at sea with my peers. I began having trouble making friends at school in fifth grade, and eventually switched to public school.

#4

I eventually took the skinny blonde’s advice and started weighing myself, memorizing the calorie counts on food, and cleaning the vomit out of my braces. I was becoming increasingly volatile everywhere else, even at school.

#5

I was sent to a private high school after my parents realized how bad my behavior had become. I was still the same person, just a different student. I didn’t fit in with the other students, and they didn’t fit in with me.
