Sample Book Insights:
#1 The first rounds slammed into the windshield, and I winced. The bulletproof glass did its job, otherwise my brains would have been blown all over the truck. The roar of machine guns was deafening, overwhelming.
#2 As we desperately tried to push up the hill, we radioed back to the tactical operations center for more information. They were watching a live feed from a Predator drone flying over the battlefield that revealed a drastically different scenario than we had been briefed on. We were in very serious trouble.

Insights from Chapter 1

#1

The first rounds slammed into the windshield, and I winced. The bulletproof glass did its job, otherwise my brains would have been blown all over the truck. The roar of machine guns was deafening, overwhelming.

#2

As we desperately tried to push up the hill, we radioed back to the tactical operations center for more information. They were watching a live feed from a Predator drone flying over the battlefield that revealed a drastically different scenario than we had been briefed on. We were in very serious trouble.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

The flight to Kandahar was the turning point for me. It was when reality set in that there was a war going on, and I would be put back into the middle of it. I had to leave my family behind and spend time with them before I went to Fort Bragg.

#2

Special Forces soldiers have a unique mystique. They live and train within a unique paradigm. On one hand, they are out there in the enemies’ backyard, living wholly within the indigenous culture. On the other hand, they are simultaneously trying to build a country and free its people from the tyrannical ideology of the Taliban.

#3

The Special Forces team is one of the most versatile units in the U. S. military. It is designed to operate independently and consists of twelve men led by a captain and a warrant officer. The team’s weapons sergeants are experts on tactics and maintain the team’s weaponry.

#4

The team was back in Afghanistan, ready to kick some ass. Zack was a top-notch weapons sergeant, and he kept Bill on his best game. Anyone who engaged the team would pay a dear price for his recklessness.

#5

The aircraft landed, and the crew chiefs quickly snapped off the huge chain supports and rolled the pallets out of the back of the plane. The pallets contained everything from weapons and ammunition to office supplies.

#6

The special operations compound is a short ride from the airfield. We drove through the gate, past the guard shack, and were dropped off in front of our barracks, a hastily built plywood building. We threw our gear onto our bunks, which consisted of cheap, thin mattresses on ramshackle metal frames.

#7

The first and fundamental requisite for establishing a strategy is to know what the end state needs to be. This is a difficult task, as it requires the establishment of a stable and secure national government in Afghanistan and the provision of security for the people.

#8

The 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group commander, Colonel Bolduc, had a desk-side brief that was personally given to all of his soldiers. He wanted them to have no doubt what to expect in the execution of their orders, and he expected them to have no ambivalence.

#9

The Special Forces unit was expected to be able to look in the mirror, not out the window. Confidence and familiarity with even the smallest tasks established this. The final and most crucial ingredient was discipline, which was not about power, but about the judicious use of authority and responsibility.

#10

The first thing I noticed when I walked into the headquarters was the memorial wall.
