Dedication
First and foremost, I would like to dedicate this book to my honey (Doyle) who has been my rock and Cookie who is known as my “Savior”.
Secondly, to the Almighty God, my family, friends, medical staff and all who crossed my path to take this journey with me.
Chapter 1
A fter working in education for twenty-two years in Mississippi, my honey and I decided it was time for retirement. One morning we were having coffee when the phone rang. Our son was calling to say he would be retiring from Ft. Carson in five or six years and had no plans of coming back south to live. He and his lovely wife and kids had fallen in love with Colorado. Being in the military, they had lived in several places over the years, but none of them held a candle to Colorado. He went on to say, “If you want to see the grand kids, you will have to come to Colorado.” In other words, “You need to move to Colorado.” We made several trips out to Colorado, and I must say it kind of grew on us. We talked about it and decided it would be the right thing for us to do since we only have one child. We sold our place on Lake Chicot and made the move. You may have heard the ole saying: “Go west, young man, Go west.”
Living in the Deep South all our lives, moving from sea level to the mountains was quite a change. The worst thing we had to endure was the dry climate. Our noses stayed dry all the time. People told us early on to put Vaseline in our noses, which keeps them moist. We soon learned to drink lots of water. We purchased a place just outside Cripple Creek, Colorado, on Four Mile Road. Several months later, we found ourselves with too little to do and became bored. Since Cripple Creek was a gambling town, we thought it would be fun to work in one of the casinos. We went for a interview, and we were hired just like that. Before being hired to work in a casino, you have to obtain gaming license and pass a background test. We passed our background checks, received our licenses and went to work the following week at the Gold Rush Hotel and Casino. It was such fun. Working in a casino, in my opinion, is different from any other job. I worked as a cashier in the cage, and my honey was a dealer at the blackjack table. The majority of the employees were from other states. Some had previously retired just like us and, moved to Colorado for different reasons. After a couple of years, we decided it would be more fun to work the night shift. In a couple of weeks, there was an opening for nights. We applied and were approved to transfer from days to nights. After about six months, I was promoted to cage supervisor, and my honey was promoted to pit boss. We worked four days and were off three. It was great having three days off.
Chapter 2
J anuary 2, 2002, was like any other cold, snowy day in Cripple Creek, Colorado. Little did I know this day would change both our lives forever. It was our first day back to work after being off for three days. I remember my honey and I were walking through the door and down the ramp into the casino to start our ten-hour, four-day workweek.
The next thing I knew, I was in the Penrose St. Francis Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado, surrounded by a team of doctors and nurses. I saw my daughter-in-law standing over in the corner out of the way. I remember she was very pale. I could sense someone was standing on the left side of my bed. As I turned my head, I realized it was my son. I remember seeing tears in his eyes as he said to me, “Daddy is on the way, “They would not let him ride with you in the helicopter.”
I did not know what was going on or what had happened. All at the same time, the nurses were taking all my clothes off and covering me with sheets. I remember hearing the doctors talking. They said. “We are taking you down the hall for a few tests.” At that point, I really didn’t care what they did or where I went. The next thing I remember, I was in a room, and I saw my honey. He told me I was in the hospital because I had fallen as we were walking through the casino, as if I’d fainted. As he was talking to me, I remember I tried to move my left leg and my left arm to get comfortable in bed. This is when I realized I had no feeling in my left side. At this point, the team of doctors came in and explained that I had experienced a stroke. This was the scariest thing I’d ever endured. The nurses took my legs and swung them off the side of the bed. They stood me up, but my left leg felt as if someone had taken it off. It felt as if it was not there, but I knew it was because I could see it. It was a very scary time.
The doctors and nurses told me they were going to give me some medication. “Get some sleep, and we will see you in the morning,” one said. The next morning, nurses and a team of specialists came in to get me up to walk.
