Lori Kennedy, RHN Biography

Lori knows firsthand what it’s like to have time restraints as she is a wife and a busy mother of two! She understands the challenge that accompanies what is means to always have nutritious food on hand with a busy schedule. For the last 4 years her fast food breakfast of choice has been a smoothie. Her son Daniel is affectionately known as “shake face.”
With over 13 years of experience in the fitness and nutrition world, Lori is the founder and CEO of WOW! Weight Loss , WOW! Professional Certification, and the producer of the Wellness Business Summit.
Lori and her WOW! Practitioners have helped thousands of clients achieve their nutrition and weight loss goals across Canada since 2007. Lori is on a mission to improve the lives, both physically and emotionally, for 1 million people by 2022.
Lori started her career as a personal trainer while attending Concordia University in Montreal. At the same time, she was suffering from severe stomach issues which went undiagnosed by many doctors over a two-year period. Fortunately, Lori was introduced to a Naturopath, who developed a Candida protocol for Lori to follow during her time away at school. Lori credits her ND for literally “saving her life” and introducing her to the power of food.
Lori Kennedy currently operates a WOW! Weight Loss Clinic in Toronto, ON and holds a position on the Board of Directors as Vice President of sales and marketing for the Canadian Association of Nutrition Professionals (CAHN-Pro).

Lorene Sauro, RHN Biography

Lorene Sauro, RHN spent 16 years as a celebrated pastry chef before personal and family health issues led to a journey from dessert magician to holistic nutritionist. She has been a registered holistic nutritionist and teacher and the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition for 13 years and she is the co-founder, and former chair, of the Canadian Holistic Nutrition Conference.
Though she has a passion for nutrition, she has never lost her desire to create the best cookies, muffins, breads and desserts. Her nutrition knowledge has led her to develop great recipes using new ingredients that still deliver the same texture and flavor people expect. Lorene hosts cooking and baking classes and for several years taught the gluten-free baking class series “Cooking without Wheat” for those with Celiac disease and gluten allergies.
Currently, Lorene is a director for the Canadian Association of Holistic Nutrition Professionals (CAHN-Pro), which regulates and board certifies holistic nutritionists and offers an apprentice program for new graduates of holistic nutrition programs.
Lorene offers a unique perspective on healthy eating to provide a comprehensive guide to better nutrition. It is her goal to help people sort through all the rhetoric and misinformation surrounding the topic of food to return to them the ability to enjoy their food and sustain their vitality and health.
Lorene believes people should focus on consuming whole foods, including whole grains and whole sweeteners, created with flavor, taste and texture. She believes we are all individuals and our diets and lifestyles should reflect this. It is best that we should all eat foods rich in nutrients and learn to respond to our natural food cues. What Are Smoothies?
A smoothie is when the whole fruit, vegetable, nut, seeds or other ingredient in blended into liquid and usually includes the addition of a liquid base like water, yogurt or milk. The fiber from the fruit and vegetables remains in the drink, which is a huge benefit for your blood sugar levels, bowel movements and general level of satiety.

This is why we’ve created our Simple Smoothie System filled with how-to instructions and delicious recipes.
 
Smoothie vs. Juicing:
A juice is the liquid of a fruit or vegetable. The fiber has been removed but the vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients remain. The advantage of this is that they can deliver a lot of nutrients in an easy-to-drink form.
Smoothies are raw or mainly raw so they contain lots of enzymes making them easy to digest. However, juices are mainly carbohydrates and can spike blood sugar- especially if they are a fruit juice based.
It takes several oranges or carrots to make an eight ounce glass of juice. Also, since they have no fiber, it can affect how well a person eliminates waste. If someone decides to do a juice cleanse to detox, it defeats the purpose of the detox if their bowels do not move.
A smoothie is made from whole foods and contains all the vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients as well as the fiber of the food. An eight ounce fruit smoothie, made of just fruit, has fewer calories than an eight ounce glass of fruit juice made from the same types of fruits.
A smoothie can be well-balanced with fats, protein and carbohydrates as it allows for ingredients like nuts, seeds, protein powder and different types of milk. It can also be made with fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, kombucha and even sauerkraut or kimchee if you want to be adventurous, and smoothies may provide valuable probiotics.
Chia, flax and hemp seeds can provide beneficial essential fatty acids and even coconut oils, which can be added for some protective saturated fat and medium-chain triglycerides that help to burn calories.
 
Which is Better & What are the Benefits?
A smoothie can be anything you like. Depending on the ingredients you choose, it can be balanced with protein, fats, fiber, probiotics and complex carbohydrates with plenty of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. Smoothies can easily provide enough calories for a normal meal or contain fewer calories to aid weight loss or act as a great snack.
It can be made to allow for a few chunks of foods so we have to do some chewing or blended to be completely smooth like its name. It is your choice. Most importantly, it can sedate the appetite because it has texture and calories from a balance of micro and macronutrients.

 
Convenience
Smoothies are a great way to make a meal quickly and easily. Throw the chosen foods into a blender, Vitamix, Magic Bullet or Nutribullet and blend. They can be flavored as desired.
For some, adding a healthy sweetener such as raw honey or 100% pure maple syrup would make it more pleasing to the palette. For other mixtures, maybe some sea salt and pepper or fresh herbs and spices will make it taste as you wish. The goal is to keep it simple, and flavorful so that it is convenient.
