Description

Horseracing happens literally every day of the year - which is why unique and unusual events are almost commonplace in the Sport of Kings, Queens and commoners, even when that day in designed to fool you - as many felt was the case when, on 1 April 1929, a jockey named Frank Wise didn't live up to his name as he was unwise enough to ride in the Irish Grand National with only one leg and minus the tops of three fingers - yet he and his mount, Alike, won the race. Then there was the race meeting at which two dates combined when Good Friday fell on Boxing Day - literally - with the horse of that name taking a tumble at Wolverhampton on 26 December 1899. Make a note in your diary to buy yourself or your racing relatives and friends Graham Sharpe's latest book, containing literally hundreds more similarly notable, memorable, racey stories for every single day of the year. All the stories in The Racing Post' s Horseracing On This Day have been expertly researched and this book is a must-have for any fans of horseracing

All eight of the runners in the Grand Metropolitan Steeplechase, run at Flemington, Australia, refused at the first obstacle.
1 JANUARY 1859
Born on this date in Kentucky, black jockey Isaac Murphy rode 628 winners from 1,412 career rides - a 44pc strike rate. He was paid a $10,000 annual retainer by owner Lucky Baldwin, but died much too young from pneumonia, aged 37.
1 JANUARY 2022
On this date Charlie Johnston officially joined his Dad, Mark Johnston, Britain s biggest-winning trainer in history, on a joint licence at Kingsley Park in Middleham.
Mark Johnston said of his son s pivotal role at the stable, The time has come for Charlie to share the responsibility as well. He has passed all his modules at the BHA, and his application has been approved.
Charlie Johnston told the Racing Post that the change was part of a plan that will see him eventually fully take over at Kingsley Park. I m in a very fortunate position to draw on Dad s 30 years and 4,800-plus winners of experience, but at the same time have some youth and drive to push the string onwards and upwards on to greater heights.
1 JANUARY 2022
The first race of 2022, the 12.15 Listed Novices Hurdle, was won by Henry Daly-trained 3-1 Hillcrest at Cheltenham. The horse won in the colours of the late, triple Grand National-winning owner Trevor Hemmings, who died the previous October. Also on this date dual Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Al Boum Photo won the New Year s Day Chase at Tramore - for the fourth time.
On the same card, 43-year-old amateur rider David Maxwell, who rides all of his own 11 horses, beat the likes of Harry Skelton, Jamie Moore and Brendan Powell as he won the Paddy Power Handicap Hurdle over an extended 2m7f on his own 28-1 shot Dolphin Square - just edging out another, rather younger, amateur rider, Jersey-born Victoria Malzard on Kansas City Chief.
2 JANUARY 1979
Melbourne s first all-female jockey race was held at Moonee Valley course on this day. It was won by Macluen, ridden by Queenslander Cheryl Neale, who, in doing so, became the first Queensland female rider to win a metropolitan race interstate.
2 JANUARY 1992

3 JANUARY 1912

3 JANUARY 1983
Unmarried at the time of writing, jockey Hayley Turner, born on this day in 1983, revealed in an interview that her family once tried to persuade her that she was a married woman after she lost her memory for two weeks due to a fall.
Hayley said, They told me all this stuff which I believed, including that my husband was on his way over to see me. I ve never been married!
She s had a dream career already, but has also reportedly revealed that she had once literally dreamed of something completely different - being married to Bruce Forsyth!
3 JANUARY 1984
Two right royal racing-related events on the same date, as, firstly, the Prince of Wales fell off of his mount whilst out with the Cottesmore Hunt in Leicestershire - then Buck House announced that women would be banned from the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot if their hats are too small .
3 JANUARY 2022
Charlie and Mark Johnston secured their first winner as joint-licence holders after Golden Sands, backed from 16-1 to 9-4 favourite, landed a gamble in Wolverhampton s 1m f handicap, ridden by Joe Fanning.
4 JANUARY 1954
Born on this date, US trainer Roger Stein caused sharp intakes of breath at Ascot on 28 September 1991 when the horse s American trainer, who was born on 4 January 1954, turned up in the parade ring sporting a blue tracksuit and, horror of horrors, no tie! The horse finished fifth of nine in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.
4 JANUARY 1990
The Shanahan Bay became the first - but far from the last - horse to win four races on the all-weather, when the Eric Eldin-trained five-year-old scored over 6f at Lingfield.
5 JANUARY 1920
Both horses contesting a Plumpton chase fell today in 1920. One was remounted and went on to win. The other was caught by a spectator
who rode him to the finish and was officially placed second as he - a Mr Dale - made the weight.
5 JANUARY 1980
Legendary trainer Martin Pipe loved a tilt at the bookies, and, as he explained to Racing Post readers in December 2015, his best bet happened in a humble selling hurdle race at Haydock on this day in 1980.
I drove the Range Rover and trailer [containing his horse, Carrie Ann] to Haydock. It was the second time [his assistant] Chester Barnes had been racing with me.
Chester backed the horse with bookmaker Pat Whelan - 3,300 to 100. He never even altered the odds, so I told Chester to go in again. He had another 100 on. I had gone around all the other bookmakers on the track - 30-plus in those days - backing the horse.
Meanwhile, my father had backed Carrie Ann in betting shops and every credit firm in England on the Tote - who still declared a dividend of 240-1.
Carrie Ann won comfortably under Rod Millman. I still remember my wife Carol greeting us when we returned home - and filled up lots of buckets with cash.
5 JANUARY 2022
Hayley Turner rode her first winner of 2022 as she returned from a seven-week absence due to thumbthing of an injury, at Wolverhampton on this day in 2022. A 39-year-old Hayley explained: I broke my thumb which sidelined me for seven weeks, so it was nice to get back with a winner. It was a bit frustrating - I d pulled up on one of David Simcock s horses after the line and he just fell over. The horse, that is, not Simcock! She added, perhaps appropriately enough, It was nice to have a good break.
5 JANUARY 2022

After an absence of almost three years during World War Two, jump racing finally resumed at Cheltenham.
6 JANUARY 1992
Dual Classic-winning jockey Tony Murray was found dead, aged 41, on this date. He won the Oaks on Ginevra in 1972, and the St Leger on Bruni in 1975, both for Captain Ryan Price, amongst his 1,100+ winners. He once pointed out, When you lose a race, it s a matter of passing the buck; the owner blames the trainer, the trainer blames the jockey, and the jockey blames the poor old horse.
7 JANUARY 1833
Jockey John Osborne was born on this day. He won all five Classics during his career. He boasted mutton-chop whiskers, but never wore a collar and tie if possible, while his clothes were described as generally old and shabby .
7 JANUARY 1865
Australia s longest-ever hurdles race took place over four miles, with 22 3ft 8in hurdles to jump, at Pyalong, near Seymour. The outcome appears to have gone missing in the mists of time.

8 JANUARY 1996
Reg Hollinshead-trained Loch Style and Taniyar turned up for their races at Southwell - only for confusion to arise. After finishing seventh, despite going off as 5-2 second favourite in the 2.15 race, Loch Style was recognised as actually being Taniyar in the unsaddling enclosure. Or perhaps the other way round - to this day there seems to be a doubt as to which it was!
The Independent reported, There was chaos in the betting ring after it was discovered that a wrong horse had run in the fifth race. Loch Style, due to run in a seven-furlong race at 3.15, contested a mile-and-a-half contest at 2.15, running in the name of stablemate Taniyar.
Hollinshead said after the mix-up, I can only apologise to the people who have had a few quid on.
One of those people , Philip Marshall from Sutton-in-Ashfield, staked 700 on the horse he thought was Taniyar, and said, This is an absolute disgrace. He d have been 33-1 if we d known it was Loch Style.
Yet, on checking the Racing Post records of past races before writing this account, it transpired that the race report lists Loch Style as being seventh but makes no reference to the f
