Foreword by Sarah, Duchess of York
Losing weight is one part organization, one part inspiration. It s one thing to know how to lose weight. Perhaps just as important is a belief that we can-and will.
As you will see in these pages, belief is at the very core of the Weight Watchers experience. Attend any meeting and you cannot help but feel motivated by women and men who have successfully shed weight-and kept it off.
How did they do it? How did I do it? I struggled quite famously with my weight for years, flitting from one quick-fix diet to another. In retrospect I fought valiantly, yet ultimately lost the battle because I did not acknowledge what I now know: Diets don t work. And Weight Watchers does. That s because Weight Watchers is not a diet. It s about adopting a healthy lifestyle.
Incredibly, change found me the day I stepped into my first Weight Watchers meeting. All around me were people who were excited about success. Our leader was a glowing success story, of course. But so were the Lifetime Members in the room and also those still working toward their goals.
What I love about this book is that it captures the amazing spirit of a Weight Watchers meeting. I promise you, reading these chapters will motivate you, too!
Everyone loves a dramatic weight-loss story and you have some terrific ones here. No less impressive are the chapters about people whose lives were changed in significant ways by moderate or even modest slimming.
You will see that this collection of personal accounts reminds us that weight-loss success isn t just about losing. It s also about gaining, in terms of better health, improved self-esteem, and a renewed joy for living.
These stories remind us that losing weight can be an empowering, life-changing journey. We often hear that being overweight is a symptom that other things may not be quite right. We see this time and again in these pages, and it s encouraging to see what can happen when mind, body, and soul finally come together in harmony.
I especially like the fact that Weight Watchers has published this book as a celebration of the success that so many of its members enjoy. For all the so-called experts and role models out there who profess to hold the keys to weight loss, isn t it extraordinary that some of the most inspirational figures we ll ever meet are people just like us who are stepping up and winning at the weight game?
There was a time when I felt that my weight was the bane of my existence. Worse, I felt alone in my struggle. My entire life changed, thanks to the sharing and caring I found at Weight Watchers. Provided with the right program and the best support possible from my leader and fellow members, I could not help but succeed.
I think this book s title, Start Living, Start Losing, says it all. Make the changes you can live with and you will lose weight. What s more, the experience will transform you from the inside out. I hope you will find inspiration and wisdom in these wonderful stories, as I have.
Acknowledgments
When the editors at Weight Watchers Publishing Group began the process of putting together the manuscript for this book, everyone we approached was enthusiastic about the assignment. We began to build a team that spanned the United States and included real people who graciously shared their stories and a group of talented writers, editors, and designers who brought these stories to life. Soon that enthusiasm grew, spurring an even greater commitment and passion. We wanted to make sure we told stories in each individual s voice to capture the scope of events and emotions that occur when a person is trying to lose weight or lead a healthier life. Many people need to be acknowledged for their efforts, as well as for their dedication. The individuals who shared their stories are to be thanked for their time and heartfelt honesty. The editorial group was led by editor and writer Stacey Colino, whose skill and commitment were a guiding force for the writing team of Emma Smith, Ginny Graves, Kathleen Doheny, Elinor Nauen, and Sheryl Berk. Many thanks are also extended to members of Weight Watchers Publishing Group who made invaluable contributions, including Jennifer Matarazzo, Celia Shatzman, and Ed Melnitsky. Special thanks to Maura McEvoy for capturing a spirit and joy in her photos and to Tom Miller, our editor at Wiley, who provided a skilled guiding hand in making the manuscript a richer read for all.
