Description

Are you looking for more peace in your life? Do you wonder how you can develop the habits and character traits that will teach you when to say, "No" to energy-draining activities and "Yes" to becoming the person you've always longed to be?

Then Cultivating Your Character is the perfect guide for you on your path to greater self-esteem, success, leadership, and life-changing new habits.

Deanna Becket takes her readers on an incredible journey, first back in time to learn Benjamin Franklin's thirteen virtues that he developed weekly as habits to build his personal character. By focusing on one character virtue each week and regularly reviewing his progress, Franklin developed lifelong habits for his success. Who better than Benjamin Franklin to learn from, and with author and life coach Deanna Becket's help, you can enjoy the same success in whatever your goals are.

By exploring these thirteen character virtues, you'll learn how to:
* Reduce stress and live a simpler life
* Develop strength in times of adversity
* Keep your word in relation to your responsibilities
* Let the little things go to focus on what really matters
* Choose joy in your thoughts and your words
* Change your communication strategies for the better
* Cultivate your faith to carry you through any crisis
* Listen to the silent voice inside you that knows best

Get ready to enhance your goals, dreams, business, beliefs, family relationships, and more. Dig deep, like the cultivator in the dirt, to sharpen your skills and grow your future.

"Where excellence is expected, excellence is achieved ."

To my mom, the late Debbie Tessmann.

Thank you for your patience and endurance through almost all of these stories. They are embedded in me and my siblings as character traits that we are passing on to our children.
Acknowledgments
The summer I worked on this book felt long and grueling. My family found ways to make their own food and let me spend the hours needed to keep on writing. Bull-headedness and persistence were required, and I could not have done it without their backup.

Thank you, Chris, for encouraging me to get my first ever J.O.B. in twenty years to fund this endeavor. Thank you to Ian for spending your weeks working at camp. The house was forever quiet for me to focus. Thank you, Kali, for being the constant bookhound you are. Your quietness and patience while I was tucked away with the laptop or pen and paper were invaluable.

Thank you to all of my immediate and extended family for their support, cheers, and encouragement.

Thank you to my sister, Misty, for your use of a couple of stories from your blog. Adding your writing skill is a sparkle of sunshine on these pages. Thank you to my dad, Roger, and brother, Damon, for the years of fun, memories on the farm, growing up together, and discussion of these stories.

Thank you to my mentors over the past twenty years of my growth and transformation, especially Jesus, Joyce Meyer, John C. Maxwell, and Joel Osteen.

Thank you to my first business mentor, the late Vicki Donovan.

Preface

“Character is built into the spiritual fabric of personality hour by hour, day by day, year by year in much the same deliberate way that physical health is built into the body.”

— E. Lamar Kincaid

Originally, this book was to have twelve chapters of leadership habits—one to develop each month for a year. Now it is at thirteen. Thirteen: the unlucky number, the odd count, or a bonus chapter? Thirteen is known in the baking world as a bonus in a pack of baked goods: The baker’s dozen. You get thirteen donuts for the price of twelve. Here is a baker’s dozen of character traits to build in your life so you can get better or be your best next year, in five years, and in twenty years.

I encourage you to read this book through once, without stopping. Then go back and start at the beginning. Focus on Chapter One for an entire thirty days. It takes thirty days to make or break a habit. Write the character trait at the top of your calendar page every day for the entire month in red ink. If you start mid-month, adjust it on your calendar accordingly. If you want to plan ahead, flip to Chapter Two, and then the next month, write the character trait and continue on through the book and your calendar. Now, start reading just that chapter for the entire month. Every morning and every evening, read ten to fifteen minutes or more.

When you get to the reviews at the end of each chapter, write your answers or grab a notebook, journal, or other fun writing book and truly reflect on the questions. Write down your answers in full. Quickly jot down words or full sentences that come to mind. In a year, you will be doing it again. Date the top of the page and write down the book and page number so you can look back at your growth over the year. It really is amazing to see your own growth in the answers you have written in the past.
