#1

I had a loaded. 45 caliber handgun, and I knew my life needed to change. I had to grow. I had stepped into a rare opportunity to start my career in a management role at the Pentagon, and I was scared shitless.

#2

My first day on the job, I was escorted to a basement office, where I saw a space heater struggling to do its job against the cold leaking through the walls. I was told that since I was a woman, I would have to earn a desk.

#3

I was assigned to work with Mr. Misogyny, and I was miserable. I was forced to work from a small desk in a storage closet, and I was not allowed to speak to any of my colleagues. After three days, I found an empty two-drawer filing cabinet and made it my desk.

#4

The six CORE NATURE words are communicative, wise, joyful, bold, curious, and funny. They are the energy you bring to the room when you’re in your most natural state. They are a reflection of how people experience you.

#5

I had a very curious nature, and I was always asking questions. I thought that joining the government would be a service to the world, and I could use my boldness for this purpose.

#6

Passion is important, but it should not be your only consideration when choosing a career. You should also consider your CORE NATURE, your CORE SKILL SET, and your CORE VALUES.

#7

I learned that your natural talents can always outmaneuver years of experience. Do you believe you don’t have enough experience to land the job of your dreams. Look, we live in a workforce that prizes years of experience, but the truth is that who you are – your natural gifts – always wins at work.

#8

The culture of proving yourself is getting old, and it prevents us from doing our best work. It is easy to feel like the new kid in school every day, because we live in a culture of proving ourselves.

#9

Working in national security brought me face-to-face with these challenges and my own belief systems as a young woman working in a male-dominated world. The general population perceives competence based on how attractive, confident, and masculine a person appears.

#10

The term honey trap refers to a woman who seduces men in order to gather intelligence. I was working to become a honey trap, traveling to some of the darkest corners of the world. I wanted to make a difference.

#11

I had a passion for my work, but I took every fatality to heart. I would often travel with civilians who were being deployed to Afghanistan, and I would worry about their safety.

#12

Your boundaries are where you decide what’s healthy for you. You decide in advance how you will show up in the world to honor them. In my case, I decided never to engage in shit-talking, listen without talking if I felt uncomfortable, and tell people I’d get back to them if they had a great question I couldn’t answer.

#13

I began to feel like I was working just to show myself that I was capable of something. I was still filing reports and training new recruits, but I wasn’t enjoying it anymore. I was beginning to feel like a drone.

#14

The journey of life is full of ups and downs, but the important thing is to be able to see the trampoline in between them. Our painful experiences can and will serve as trampolines that launch us into our next level in life.

#15

Getting started is the toughest part of any goal. We tend to ignore those whispers because we’ve been taught that fine is fine. But it’s not. When was the last time you said something was fine.

#16

When I was kidnapped, I felt completely out of place. The marines had no room for mistakes, and I couldn't afford to make one.

#17

When you’re not connected to yourself, or your true nature, it’s difficult to know what you like, what you dislike, or what you’re genuinely interested in. This is why finding out who you are, your true nature, is so important.

#18

To discover your CORE NATURE, you must ask for feedback from friends and family, and then look at the fears, blocks, or limitations you’ve bought into about who you should be in your life and career. Those are what keep us from the truth of who we are and the fulfillment we really want.

#19

To become your CORE NATURE, you must first identify the blocks that are keeping you from it. These blocks are typically limiting beliefs or mindsets you’ve been buying into for a long time.

#20

When I was in the military, I realized that my CORE NATURE is one of joy, and that didn’t work in a military environment where we were living in constant fear. This realization led me to become an author and speaker.

#21

The duality of smallness and greatness is a part of life. You must have experienced your smallness in order to understand and accept your greatness. You must clean up your windshield, which means clearing away the muck of judgments, limitations, and stories that keep you small.

#22

I was sad and lonely, and I missed my family and friends. I was embarrassed that I had allowed myself to get so tired, and I felt more alone than ever.

#23

I had spent the last few days in Washington creating a program for the police department. I was proud of myself, but I was also devastated. I felt spiritually sick, like a deep void was penetrating every cell in my body.

#24

When we are failing in our careers, it just means we’re operating out of alignment with our CORE SKILL SET, our most natural and ingrained talent or gift in the world. The truth is that this sort of failure is just feedback telling us it's time to reconnect with our core and make a You Turn.

#25

We often find ourselves stuck in careers we don’t enjoy, relationships that don’t suit us, or anything that isn’t in alignment with our true nature. We are constantly influenced by the perceptions of others, which is why we end up stuck in jobs we don’t like, relationships we don’t like, or anything that isn’t in alignment with our true nature.

#26

Quitting is not always a sign of loser status. It is reserved for badass human beings who are willing to face the truth of where they are and do something about it.

#27

I was so stuck in my job that I didn’t even realize I was unhappy until I was presented with the opportunity to leave it. I was terrified of what people would think if I came home. I had to make a choice: the person I wanted to be or my old way of being. I chose the latter.

#28

When you finally decide to listen to your intuition, and you know you’re done, the universe tests your commitment to yourself.

#29

Our gut is made up of 200 to 600 million nerve cells, and it is the second brain. It communicates the good feeling we get from doing the right action to our actual brain, which serves as the link between our two brains.
