Insights from Chapter 1
#1
I want to give my kids the confidence to dream out loud. I want to show them that ridiculously good things do happen, even if they seem completely unbelievable. I was given the opportunity to do something with my creativity and passion, and I want to give that to my kids as well.
#2
When you articulate a new dream, you should receive a response similar to Philip’s. He took care of dinner and got the kids to bed, and then drove me around town so I could think. I returned home with a gas tank on empty and my mind on full blast.
#3
I had to cook two or three meals a day to meet my birthday deadline, and I was still missing a good camera and a smartphone. I met a character named Brian Hardin, who was experienced in filming and editing, and we worked on six videos together.
#4
I launched my first blog, Sticky Cook, on April 26, 2010. I was so proud to have seen this project through, and grateful for Brian and Philip and Jo who had helped me make it a reality by my birthday deadline.
#5
I was told that Oprah was running a competition to promote the launch of her new network, OWN, and that anyone could submit a video pitching their own TV show. I entered, and my video was picked as one of the finalists.
#6
I had been so broke just a few years earlier that I had to borrow money from a friend to buy myself a box of tampons. I had been sure I was going to be alone, poor, and miserable forever. But I had met and married Philip, and I felt like I had stumbled onto more than my fair share of good fortune.
#7
I was one of the ten contestants on the TV show Oprah’s Search for the Next TV Star. I was ecstatic to be validated by the most powerful person in television, but I was also away from my family for seven weeks.
#8
I was thrilled that Zach made it to the final round, as I’d been rooting for him the entire time. I felt a connection with him, as our struggles weren’t exactly the same, but we’d both had an easy or typical life up to that point.
#9
The final episode of Bigger, Badder, and Beautiful aired, and it was revealed that both Zach and I had won. I cried because I finally believed that my dreams were worth pursuing. I was standing next to a man who’d always believed that, and I had Oprah believing in me, too.
#10
I was finally reunited with my kids in our little apartment, but I was legally obligated to keep the secret for another four months. I was so grateful that I had Zach to process all these new emotions with.
