Sample Book Insights:
#1 Focusing on smaller things will make us more effective and allow us to do less, which will give us more free time. It'll force us to choose and stop the excesses that have led to our economic problems.
#2 I changed my life by changing one thing at a time, by learning to find focus so that I could create, and by simplifying and focusing on less. This worked not only for me but for many of my readers who changed their lives by changing just one thing at a time.
#3 We live in curious times. It's called the Age of Information, but in another light it can be called the Age of Distraction. While humanity has never been free of distraction, never have the distractions been so voluminous, so overwhelming, so intense, and so persistent as they are now.
#4 The internet and other digital activities can be addictive. They offer instant positive feedback and delayed negative feedback, which make them extremely difficult to stop.

Insights from Chapter 1

#1

Focusing on smaller things will make us more effective and allow us to do less, which will give us more free time. It'll force us to choose and stop the excesses that have led to our economic problems.

#2

I changed my life by changing one thing at a time, by learning to find focus so that I could create, and by simplifying and focusing on less. This worked not only for me but for many of my readers who changed their lives by changing just one thing at a time.

#3

We live in curious times. It's called the Age of Information, but in another light it can be called the Age of Distraction. While humanity has never been free of distraction, never have the distractions been so voluminous, so overwhelming, so intense, and so persistent as they are now.

#4

The internet and other digital activities can be addictive. They offer instant positive feedback and delayed negative feedback, which make them extremely difficult to stop.

#5

The rapid change in lifestyle caused by technology has not been well-planned, and we are not prepared for it. We don’t have new strategies for dealing with being connected most of the time, and we don’t have new cultural norms to guide us.

#6

The Age of Distraction is a result of our society’s expectations of us. It’s difficult to opt out because it requires courage or arrogance, and many people don’t have the courage or the willingness to be an arrogant prima donna.

#7

The world is a noisy place, and you will be tempted to switch to another task or check email. But you must resist those distractions and focus on the task at hand.

#8

Focus is crucial to those who create, because creating is so difficult without it. It is difficult to create if you are constantly distracted by other things.

#9

When we consume and communicate, we're taking away from the time we have to create. We should note that communicating and consuming information aren’t necessarily evil, as they help us create. But they take away from the time we have to create.

#10

To free up your time and mind for creating, you must separate your day into periods of creation, consumption, and communication. Do not mix these up.

#11

Focus and distraction are two different things.
