Insights from Chapter 2

#1

The bounce-back muscles are the skills you develop to help you deal with adversity. They help you bounce back after a setback, and they make you more resilient. They develop when you go through difficult times, and they make you stronger.

#2

Your bounce-back muscles are not developed through physical activity. They are developed through life experiences and challenges, and they are shaped by your ability to overcome them.

#3

The first muscle you’ll learn about is your Understanding Muscle. This is the muscle that allows you to see beyond the present moment and your immediate situation. A strong Understanding Muscle enables you to recognize the greater good that will come out of a given set of circumstances.

#4

I had a difficult time adjusting to the integration process in elementary school, as I was one of the first African American students to be a part of it. I was overwhelmed by fear and confusion, and I wanted to run back to safety, but if I did, then we weren’t free at last.

#5

Some kids in my school taunted me by calling me Kizzy, one of the main characters in Roots, a television show about the ancestral journey of African Americans through slavery. It was a great show, but the timing was terrible for our district’s attempt at integration.

#6

I was the only African American girl in my class, and I tried to fit in with the other girls, but they treated me differently. I was selected for the Charlie’s Angels competition, but I was not selected for the Bionic Woman competition.

#7

The story of your victimhood explains why you are the way you are: why you choose to no longer trust, why you can only depend on yourself, or why no one truly understands you. It can be triggered by a traumatic event from your past, such as being bullied in school.

#8

I had to deal with the challenges of my own South Central Los Angeles neighborhood when I started going to a local junior high. I seemed to shrink inside, getting further and further away from that joyful and loving girl I’d once been.

#9

When we don’t have the space to see the benefit in everything that’s happened to us, we become a victim of our perceived injustices. We start to drag around all those old issues and past experiences, and use them as reasons to avoid taking new risks.

#10

Your past is not who you are, but it has helped you become who you are. It has made you more resilient and more compassionate, and it has taught you how to treat people.

#11

To strengthen your Understanding Muscle, start stretching it every day. When something sets you off and you find yourself slipping into Why me. or frustration mode, ask yourself immediately how what you’re going through will make you a better person.

#12

Your Understanding Muscle is what helps you understand the people around you. When you go to college, you may have a roommate who is white and has never seen an African American person on television. You may feel like an outcast, and your anger may build. But when you see how hurt Suzie is, your anger immediately turns to compassion.

#13

When someone pushes your buttons, it’s usually because they’ve reactivated an old experience of hurt or anger in you. When you find compassion inside for that person, your Understanding Muscle grows stronger and helps you heal both the past and present.

#14

The Feeling of Being Victimized is a common one. When your Understanding Muscle is strong, you experience less resistance in relationships.
