Sample Book Insights:
#1 In our culture, extroversion is considered the norm. It is the club that everyone wants to be part of. But introverts are not inferior to extroverts, and vice versa. We are different personality types with different needs and motivations.
#2 The introvert’s way is wrong, and the extrovert’s way is right. The right way is the extrovert’s way.
#3 The extrovert’s way is not for everyone. It’s a path that requires more stimulation to feel good than introversion, and it tends to talk and move at a faster pace. It wants to do it all and see it all, and it wants to say it all with as few rest stops as possible.
#4 The key to happiness is to surround yourself with people, but for introverts this is not enough. We need alone time as much as we need human contact. If we are forced to be around people all the time, we can experience feelings of depletion, sadness, and even depression.

#1

In our culture, extroversion is considered the norm. It is the club that everyone wants to be part of. But introverts are not inferior to extroverts, and vice versa. We are different personality types with different needs and motivations.

#2

The introvert’s way is wrong, and the extrovert’s way is right. The right way is the extrovert’s way.

#3

The extrovert’s way is not for everyone. It’s a path that requires more stimulation to feel good than introversion, and it tends to talk and move at a faster pace. It wants to do it all and see it all, and it wants to say it all with as few rest stops as possible.

#4

The key to happiness is to surround yourself with people, but for introverts this is not enough. We need alone time as much as we need human contact. If we are forced to be around people all the time, we can experience feelings of depletion, sadness, and even depression.

#5

Extroverts think that introverts are wasting their time by spending time alone. But for introverts, thinking is a form of doing. For extroverts, spending time alone looks like we are doing nothing.

#6

Introverts are often seen as the weakest link in the extrovert’s World Series. Because they are so sensitive, they struggle with the extrovert’s desire to constantly be engaged in life.

#7

Introverts can easily get sucked into the extrovert’s more-is-more mentality. We are often content with less, but we give energy to everything we own. We must be sure our possessions offer us something valuable in return.

#8

The open-door policy is not suitable for introverts. It is difficult for us to multitask, and we are better at single-tasking.

#9

The extrovert’s way does not offer the benefits that it claims. We think we will find fulfillment and acceptance, but instead we get a cookie-cutter life and a vague sense of longing. We must turn inward and find our own fulfillment.

#10

Introverts are quiet people in a noisy world. We are told that growing sturdier limbs and a thicker skin is the only way to make it, so we tough ourselves up and force ourselves out of our comfort zone in hopes that we will find happiness on the outside.

#11

Introverts need quiet to connect the dots in their constellations of thought. Sadly, introverts have been told to run from quiet comforts, rather than take pleasure in them.

#12

In a world of nonstop noise, silence is a real treat for introverts. We are eager for the pause because it gives us the chance to mentally digest what we have seen and heard. However, our culture fears silence, and this aversion to quiet is a worldwide epidemic.

#13

The Should Voice is what I call the judgments and opinions of others that reverberate through our memory, producing a flurry of guilt in their wake. Together, these menacing thoughts create a space for worry, self-criticism, and obsession to seep in.

#14

The Should Voice is made up of all the things people tell us we should do to fit in. introverts are constantly being bombarded with these shoulds, and we end up acting out of obligation instead of conviction.

#15

When you are introverted, you are faced with the difficult question of who you are. You know who you are not: you are not as quiet or shy as people think you are. You might have to go back into your memory to find out who you are.

#16

Retreats are wonderful, but they are often too short-lived. We must incorporate weekly and daily restorative practices into our lives. These include going for a walk in nature, watching and/or playing with animals, bringing your full attention to eating a good meal, journaling, reading for pure pleasure, and any other form of creative expression.
