Bushwhackers adds to the growing body of literature that examines the various irregular conflicts that took place during the American Civil War. Author Joseph M. Beilein Jr. looks at the ways in which several different bands of guerrillas across Missouri conducted their war in concert with their house- holds and their female kin who provided logistical support in many forms. Whether noted fighters like Frank James, William Clarke Quantrill, and "Bloody Bill" Anderson, or less well-known figures such as Clifton Holtzclaw and Jim Jackson, Beilein provides a close examination of how these warriors imagined themselves as fighters, offering a brand-new interpretation that gets us closer to seeing how the men and women who participated in the war in Missouri must have understood it.Beilein answers some of the tough questions: Why did men fight as guerrillas? Where did their tactics come from? What were their goals? Why were they so successful? Bushwhackers demonstrates that the guerrilla war in Missouri was not just an opportunity to settle antebellum feuds, nor was it some collective plummet by society into a state of chaotic bloodshed. Rather, the guerrilla war was the only logical response by men and women in Missouri, and one that was more in keeping with their worldview than the conventional warfare of the day.As guerrilla conflicts rage around the world and violence remains closely linked with masculine identity here in America, this look into the past offers timely insight into our modern world and several of its current struggles.

I T IS WITH MIXED EMOTIONS that I present to you Bushwhackers . It is a book that has given me joy and purpose and has sparked a great amount of self-discovery and growth. As it leaves my hands and enters yours, I am confronted with that anxious feeling that always accompanies the irresistible onrushing of the unknown. What will I do now? Can my next project give me as much as this study? Will I ever be able to fully emerge from the universe of the guerrilla and enter another historical world? Despite these questions that remain unanswered for the moment, it is with a deep sense of pride that I offer you this book, without apology, caveat, or qualification. I have striven to put onto the pages that follow the most intimate historical rendering of the guerrillas who fought in Civil War Missouri. In my pursuit of their identity as men, I was forced to become much more aware of myself. Along the way there were fights with a wide range of adversaries both real and metaphorical; there were victories and defeats, I lost pieces of myself, but in sacrificing a little bit I have gained much more. Most important, in the spirit of the guerrillas, I lived to fight another day and was able to produce something that will live on and keep up the fight long after I am gone.

This project, which can be traced back to my master’s thesis and dissertation, could not have been possible if not for the various forms of financial support that I received from the Department of History at the University of Missouri. It is impossible to name all of the people who assisted or otherwise influenced the creation of this book. The list of teachers and comrades and colleagues is probably too long for me to mention everyone, but I will try. My first interest in Missouri’s guerrilla conflict came during my undergraduate days at Kenyon College where Will Scott did his best to guide me through the complexities of the war “on the other side of the river,” as he called it. His biggest challenge was not so much explaining the war but rather who he was trying to explain it to (a rather distracted student with a passion for a number of extracurricular activities). Bruce Kinzer and Roy Wortman were also of great influence upon my work, but no one knew it at the time. In my graduate studies, the list of professors who taught me at the University of Missouri is a long one: Mark Carroll, Wilma King, Mary Jo Neitz, Jeff Pasley, Linda Reeder, Robert Smail, Robert Weems, John Wigger, and Laurel Wilson. I have also been very lucky to have a wide range of Civil War scholars read, comment, or otherwise shape all or pieces of this book. Comradery was critically important to the completion of this project. There were my friends from Mizzou who sat around the same seminar table with me, read pieces of this book, but more important were supportive both in and out of the classroom. There are people who have had a larger influence on this work than anyone else. The first is Andrew Fialka, who is first and foremost an old friend. You will not only see his maps in the pages of this book, but he is producing maps for this entire generation of guerrilla scholars. His own work, which deals directly with mapping the guerrilla war in dynamic ways, is some of the most fascinating scholarship out there and should lead us all to think about the guerrillas in new ways. Next is Matt Hulbert, who is my best friend in the profession and something of a partner in crime. Our shared interest in a particular region and particular men created a common bond that turned very quickly into friendship. It has been to my great benefit to have Matt read this work at various stages and offer his honest feedback in the nicest possible way. The person who has had the greatest influence on this work is my mentor, LeeAnn Whites. I was more than a little bit lucky that she let me study with her and even luckier that she believed in me and was willing to invest so much time and energy in me (as she does with all her graduate students). Under her tutelage, I learned quite a bit about the Civil War, gender, and history in general; I learned how to read works of history; I learned how to research and interpret documents. But more than anything else, she taught me how to think like a historian so that I could set about making my own contribution to the great cosmic conversation.
