Description

This refreshing fourth edition of the established evidence-based textbook by Elaine Atkins, Jill Kerr and Emily Goodlad continues to uphold the Cyriax approach to clinical reasoning, assessment, diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions.

Renamed A Practical Approach to Musculoskeletal Medicine, to reflect globally understood terminology, it focuses on the principles and practice of musculoskeletal medicine, providing practical guidance and tips for clinical practice based on extensive clinical experience and evidence.

The book is split into three sections. Section 1 presents the theory underpinning musculoskeletal medicine. The histology and behaviour of the soft tissues follow, with a review of the healing process, to enhance understanding of the effects of injury on the soft tissues. The first section ends with the principles of treatment as applied in musculoskeletal medicine and discusses the techniques of mobilization and injection, aims and application, and indications for use.

Section 2 adopts a regional approach. Anatomy is presented, including useful tips on surface marking to locate commonly injured anatomical structures. Assessment, lesions and treatment techniques are discussed for each region as appropriate for the stage in the healing process.

Section 3 provides resources to support the recording of assessment and to ensure safety, especially whilst learning the musculoskeletal medicine approach.

A Practical Approach to Musculoskeletal Medicine comprehensively and critically discusses current literature. It is a complete reference source for students and postgraduate medical practitioners, physiotherapists, osteopaths and other allied health professionals, including occupational therapists and podiatrists. It is essential reading.

  • Review questions and case scenarios at the end of each chapter to revise key principles of the approach
  • Updates on tendinopathy management (including optimal loading), cervical arterial dysfunction, spinal clinical models and manipulation
  • Over 250 new illustrations and photographs

Evolve Resources containing:

  • New taster video clips demonstrating assessment and treatment techniques
  • Self-assessment section
  • Image bank

About the Authors
Elaine Atkins, DProf MA Cert FE FCSP ; Jill Kerr, MSc BSc MCSP ; Emily Goodlad, MSc MCSP
The original authors, Monica Kesson and Elaine Atkins, studied physiotherapy together at St Thomas’ Hospital, London, in the early 1970s, where the methods of Dr James Cyriax were taught. From that early inspiration they continued to develop their clinical practice encompassing a wider scope of physiotherapy skills but always building on the solid, logical base provided by musculoskeletal medicine.
Jill Kerr and Emily Goodlad joined Elaine Atkins in the writing of the third edition, and the successful team has stayed together for this fourth edition. Their ideas and individual skills have developed still further and derive from their many years of teaching musculoskeletal medicine. This is reflected in the reorganization and updating of the text, as well as the inclusion of additional activities at the end of each chapter and on the linked Evolve Resources website, to enhance students’ learning and review. Their extensive clinical experience is evident throughout.
The authors continue to combine clinical practice with a teaching commitment to the Society of Musculoskeletal Medicine and have an active role in developing and achieving the Society’s strategic educational aims.
Foreword to the Fourth Edition
When my father started at St Thomas’ in the 1920s, a smart treatment for ‘rheumatism’ and ‘fibrositis’ was to have your teeth removed.
Father’s pioneering work in this neglected area may have derived in part from gleeful scepticism. More important was his profound knowledge of applied anatomy and a capacity for clinical excellence. With these pragmatic skills, and not an MRI scanner in sight, Dr Cyriax mapped with broad success an unacknowledged continent of musculoskeletal disorders.
For decades, individual practitioners would visit our home in Regent’s Park where there was one topic of conversation. Discussion of any social issue turned to the same point: astonishment that in all the world only a few liberal cognoscenti could distinguish the caps
