Description

Serge Tixa presents in this highly popular book a method of palpatory anatomy called Manual Exploration of Surface Anatomy (MESA). MESA locates anatomical structures important to clinical examination allowing careful selection of the most appropriate manual therapy technique or manoeuvre.

The new edition presents precisely and visually the various anatomical structures with the help of more than 130 colour illustrations and close to 900 black and white photographs. For every photograph showing an anatomical structure accessible to palpation, a model whose physique shows the structure clearly has been chosen. Each chapter has up to four subsections, treating the various aspects of each body region. These cover osteology, myology (musculotendinous structures), arthrology (joints and ligaments) and lastly nerves and blood vessels.

Each photograph is carefully presented and accompanied by a section of text describing the method of approach to finding the structure concerned. Whenever necessary, reminders, essential for the proper use of the methods of approach (attachments, actions and innervations) are included. Clinical notes highlight the link between palpation and clinical diagnoses.

Atlas of Surface Palpation: Anatomy of the Neck, Trunk, Upper and Lower Limbs is aimed at students and practitioners who need a method of applied anatomy in their practice.

For all the photographs in the various editions of my work, I wish to express heartfelt thanks to the many students who agreed to volunteer their time and energy by posing in photography sessions that were often very long and very tedious.
They are too numerous to mention by name here, but I must pay tribute to them all. To them all I wish to express my most profound gratitude. I am anxious for them to know that I remember them all and will never forget them, since without them this book would not be what it is.
And for this new edition, I offer my sincere thanks to my students, in particular Gabrielle Galais, Julie Garcia, Francky Roullier, and Lucile Sarrailh, who devoted themselves dependably and wholeheartedly to the various stages of the work required to produce this book.
Finally, very particular thanks go to Francky Roullier, who had the demanding and time-consuming task of coordinating and organizing the participation of all those involved.
    Introduction
This book presents a method of palpatory anatomy, which we have called Manual Exploration of Surface Anatomy (MESA). This is a method of locating anatomical structures (bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and neurovascular bundles). It is highly visual, as each structure studied is illustrated with a photograph; it also provides practical instruction, since each photograph is accompanied by a section of text describing a method of approach (MA) to the structure concerned.

Who is the book intended for?
It is aimed at all who need a method of applied anatomy in their professional practice.

    How is the book organized?
This atlas consists of over 800 photographs of the neck, trunk, and upper and lower limbs. There are twelve chapters (The Neck, The Trunk and the Sacrum, The Shoulder, The Arm, The Elbow, The Forearm, The Wrist and the Hand, The Hip, The Thigh, The Knee, The Leg, and The Ankle and the Foot). Each has up to four subsections, as appropriate, treating the various aspects of that region. These cover osteology, myology (musculotendinous structures), arthrology (joints and ligaments), and, lastly, nerves and blood vessels.
The nomenclature used is the most recent anatomical terminology.

    The two types of photograph

    Descriptive photographs include:
    - An overall photograph at the start of each chapter (The Neck, The Trunk and the Sacrum, The Shoulder, The Arm, The Elbow, The Forearm, The Wrist and the Hand, The Hip, The Thigh, The Knee, The Leg, The Ankle and the Foot).
    - Topographical photographs showing a body region with its group of notable structures accessible to palpation (e.g., anterior region of the neck or the thoracolumbar spine; the lateral inguinofemoral region or the lateral border of the foot).
    - Structural photographs illustrating, wherever possible, an anatomical structure and its relationships with the adjacent structures. These are mainly photographs of muscles or muscle groups (e.g., pectoralis major; quadriceps femoris).
The MESA photographs constitute the main body of the book. Each displays a structure to be studied. A descriptive note on the method of approach (MA) accompanies each photograph.
For every photograph showing an anatomical structure accessible to palpation, a subject whose physique shows the structure very clearly has been carefully selected. When students have actually seen a structure on a living body, they know it exists and can be palpated, whatever the patient's body type. To assist palpation, the method of approach is described.
Finally, the photographs are in black and white, a very definite decision that allows anatomical details to stand out better, thus making the method of approach even clearer.

How is the book intended to be used?
    There are two possible methods:

To explore a particular region in its entirety (e.g., the neck or the knee) or part of a region (e.g., the lateral region of the neck, the lateral border of the foot), simply turn to the relevant chapter or subsection, as indicated in the list of contents.
To look at a specific structure in all its possible aspects, consult the index for a list of all the photographs that cover that topic (e.g., scapula; sartorius muscle, which is dealt with in the chapter on the thigh as well as in the chapters on the hip and the knee).

What is new in this edition?

New methods of approach, illustrated by new photographs.
Anatomical dissection plates specially made for this new edition use visual illustration to enhance the instructional material by showing the location of a given muscle, its relationship to neighboring muscles, and the visualization of its sites of origin and insertion. In the same way it aids the localization of bony structures, joint cavities, nerves and blood vessels.
Information on the attachments of muscles is contained in notes following the description of the corresponding technique of approach. They are presented clearly and dist
