Foreword
THE REQUISITES is a series of textbooks encompassing the fundamental building blocks of medical imaging practice. This series is in its fourth decade and continues to flourish due to the diligence and success of the authors in producing high-quality work. The fourth edition of Cardiac Imaging: The Requisites again exemplifies the high standards of the series, now under the authorship and editorship of Drs. Boxt and Abbara. They have taken the mantle from Dr. Stephen W. Miller, who did an outstanding job in initiating the book and leading it through its first three editions.
Cardiac imaging as much as any part of medical imaging has evolved with astonishing rapidity over the past decade. Drs. Boxt and Abbara and their coauthors, Drs. Han, Hsu, Kalva, King, Lam, Makaryus, Malguria, Miller, and Santilli, are to be congratulated for capturing wide-ranging changes in both imaging technology and clinical applications. They have again done a great job of summarizing the most important aspects of cardiac imaging and putting the knowledge and information into accessible and useful form.
Some aspects of cardiac imaging are enduring. Certainly knowledge of anatomy will never go out of style and is covered in the first chapter. The next three chapters address echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, and cardiac computed tomography, all major technologies that have undergone dramatic changes since the last edition of Cardiac Imaging: The Requisites . Each has benefited from improvements in temporal and spatial resolution as well as the ability to create parametric images derived from image data and depicting key aspects of heart function and perfusion.
Building on the discussion of cardiac anatomy and the different technologies, the subsequent five chapters of Cardiac Imaging: The Requisites address major categories of disease, including coronary heart disease, thoracic aortic disease, valvular heart disease, myocardial disease, and congenital heart disease. Each of these subject areas is addressed by experts with up-to-date illustrations and indications of when, where, and how imaging fits into the overall management of patients with known or suspected heart diseases.
The diagnosis and management of patients with heart disease has changed substantially because of advances in technology but also because of current emphasis on appropriate utilization and a more holistic approach to patient care. It is no longer enough to know how to perform a procedure, but it is also necessary to know when and under what circumstances to perform them. Cardiac Imaging: The Requisites offers this insight.
One of the features of THE REQUISITES series most noted and appreciated in reader feedback is the use of tables and boxes to restate and summarize essential information in concise form. This reinforces the narrative discussion, and the liberal use of this approach again highlights Cardiac Imaging: The Requisites. Another positive point of feedback is on the quality and quantity of illustrations. I believe that readers wi
